Carolyn Merchant was born in 1936 in Rochester New York. She is a professor of environmental history, philosophy and ethics at the University of California, Berkley. Her research looks at the interrelationship of these three topics. She is currently researching the environmental history of the United States and California. Carolyn Merchant is the author of “Reinventing Eden”, “The Death of Nature” and several other books. She is past president of the American Society for environmental History and has received several awards;
