Call for Abstracts – Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference, Vancouver BC‏

The UBC Graduate Student Council of Sociology (GSCS) seeks paper proposals for its sixth annual interdisciplinary graduate conference, “Agency, Power, and Structure: Navigating the Social World” taking place May 10-11, 2013 at the University of British Columbia. Please see the attached poster.

The conference is an avenue for graduate students from multiple departments and institutions to come together to share empirical research and theoretical insights on our changing social world. Papers, panels, posters or multi-media presentations are welcome. All topics and frameworks are encouraged, however we especially seek submissions that critically engage with themes of social change, social justice, collective action, new technology, and other issues that take into account recent local and international developments. Please feel free to submit an individual abstract or propose a panel along with other students.

Please submit abstracts of up to 250 words to: UBC.GSCS@gmail.com with the subject heading “GSCS 2013 Conference Abstract.” The deadline for abstracts is: April 1st, 2013.

Graduate Student Funding

The OGPR is pleased to announce the availability of the 2012-2013 Faculty of Education Graduate Student Research Grant funding initiative.  The grant is not designed to be a salary grant.  The principal goal of this initiative is to reimburse UBCV Faculty of Education graduate students for the financial costs of conducting research projects necessary for the completion of their degree and is designed to cover your research or project expenses only.  The award values are up to $1,000 to successful graduate students (Magistral and Doctoral).

Please note: Graduate students cannot receive this award more than once during a given degree program.

New criteria this year:
Please note that over the past 3 years there have been an average number of 35 applications to this initiative and an average of 11 were funded.  These awards were successful based on the following: a) a strong student statement regarding their Research Proposal and a fully justified Budget; b) the student C.V. and, c) a high grade point average.

Also, please note that although the signature of your Supervisor is not required on the application form, they are still required to read and check off that they fully support your application to this grant.

The Governor General’s Gold Medal

The OGPR would like to bring to your attention the following information on a graduate dissertation award competition.

Please note that the internal Faculty of Education deadline for submission of applications to the OGPR is 4:00pm, Tuesday, February 12, 2013.

The Governor General’s Gold Medal

At the May 2013 Congregation ceremony, a gold medal is awarded to the UBC graduate student whose record is the best in the graduating class for the Doctoral degree.  A second gold medal is awarded to the graduate student whose record is the best in the graduating class for the Master’s degree with thesis.  Specific nomination guidelines, criteria and a list of required documentation are available on the FoGS website at: https://www.grad.ubc.ca/awards/governor-generals-gold-medal

Please note: SIS printouts, signed and stamped by the Department are acceptable as substitutes for official transcripts.

Eligibility note:  Students must have submitted the final copy of their theses to the Faculty of Graduate Studies between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2012.
