February Grad Student Library Workshops‏

FIREtalks:
Care and Healing
Can we only heal individuals or is possible to heal entire cultures? Are scientific and holistic approaches to care and healing necessarily mutually exclusive? Is preventive always better than restorative care? As graduate students, many of us are involved in research concerning care and healing, and we can think about these terms in many different ways. Present your ideas, research or opinions at the first FIRE Talk of 2013!
Friday, February 8th, 2:00 – 4:00pm
Present: http://bit.ly/QRfl4t (Deadline: January 31st)
Attend: http://elred.library.ubc.ca/libs/dashboard/view/3920

Applied Academia
Do academics have a responsibility to apply their research, take part in community outreach projects, or extend the impact of their work beyond ‘pure research’? Is it even possible to conduct pure research, or will all research eventually be applied? Are application, activism or knowledge translation essential parts of being an academic, or a hindrance to scholars’ ability to fully and fairly consider multiple perspectives?

University Affairs publishes news, commentary and in-depth articles on a wide range of Canadian higher education topics. The cover story of the upcoming issue, for example, is on the need to reform the PhD to prevent students from dropping out or taking too long.

UA is Canada’s largest source of university career advertising and its website regularly includes postings for postdocs and research associates. It also offers career advice, with a particular focus on graduate students and younger faculty.

If you unfamiliar with University Affairs magazine, you can view a sample digital edition online. Redeeming your free subscription is easy. Just visit universityaffairs.ca and sign up for the print edition, the digital edition or both today! Please note that UA can only deliver its free print edition to UBC campus addresses.
