Please join me in congratulating Anita Prest on two counts: First, she has successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation proposal for the members of her doctoral committee (Dr. Scott Goble, supervisor, Dr. Linda Farr Darling, and Dr. Marie McCarthy) on March 27, 2013, having previously passed her comprehensive examinations in July 2012, and now advanced to candidacy. Second, she is serving as one of the two university graduate student representatives on the President’s Search Committee to appoint a new Dean of the UBC Faculty of Graduate Studies. Both these achievements are noteworthy.

Connect Workshops
The session is an orientation to Connect so the hands-on assistance will be provided only to those who are interested in starting/experimenting right away. Those need to bring their own laptops. Furthermore, the facilitators will stay for additional 30 minutes after each scheduled session.
Even though the sessions are organized for each department, they are open to all members of the Faculty of Education if someone cannot make it to his/her “own”. The information is available at pdce.educ.ubc.ca/ConnectPD.
The Faculty of Graduate Studies is pleased to announce the new Killam Doctoral Scholarship recipients for 2013-2014 academic year. The Killam Doctoral Scholarships are provided annually from the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies. These are the most prestigious graduate awards available at UBC, and are awarded to the top doctoral candidates in the annual Tri-Agency / Affiliated Fellowships competition. The scholarships include a stipend of up to $30,000 per annum for two years and a $2,000 allowance for research-related travel during the 24 months of the scholarship.
2013-2014 Killam Doctoral Scholarship Awardees:
(in alphabetical order)
Bock, Dan
Haslam, Tegan
Nowak, Anja
VanInsberghe, Michael
Weidman, Aaron
Once the Tri-Agency competition results have been announced, we should be in a position to offer more Killam Doctoral Scholarships to the next-ranked applicants from the competition.
