Summer Symposium on Public Engagement and the Politics of Evidence

Public Engagement and the Politics of Evidence in an Age of Neoliberalism and Audit CultureJuly 23-25, 2015, University of Regina.

This symposium will examine accelerating trends in higher education: neoliberalism, the politics of evidence, and the audit culture. In an age in which value is often equated with accountancy, we will examine the place in the academy for public intellectualism, community-engagement, Indigenous epistemologies, and how the impact of our scholarship is, and ought to be, justly assessed.

Questions to be explored include:

What counts as scholarship and why?

How do we achieve accountability in an age of accountancy?

How do we measure research impact, (i.e., journal impact factor vs community and policy impact)?

Impact for whom?

Who and how do we determine whose evidence and what research is legitimate?

What can be done? How do we effect change to university practices?

Confirmed speakers include:

Dr. Marie Battiste, Dr. Nick Carleton, Dr. Norman Denzin, Dr. Michelle Fine, Dr. Chad Gaffield, Dr. Sandy Grande, Dr. Rosalind Gill, Dr. Budd Hall, Dr. Yvonna Lincoln, Dr. Matthew McKean, Dr. Marcia McKenzie, Dr. Peter McLaren, Dr. Christopher Meyers, Dr. Leigh Patel, Dr. Andrea Smith, Dr. Linda Tuhiwai Smith, Dr. Robina Thomas, Dr. Eve Tuck, and, Dr. Joel Westheimer;

Call for Submissions

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

As part of Outweek (feb 6-13), The Pride Collective is organizing Queer U, an annual graduate level academic conference on sexualities and genders. The conference centers on bringing the research and work of graduate students and established scholars from across the west coast of north america and beyond to a broad audience in an attempt to foster understanding and discussion.

This year, the theme is “Sewing Seeds and Setting Roots”. We are focusing on being able to give everyone who participates something to take away at the end of they day, so that they can develop their own thoughts and build on it in ways that are relevant to their lives. Whether this is a list of useful resources or literal tools to use to start discussions, our aim is to give everyone the foundation to work off of the histories we often forego and forget, and the confidence to make the changes they want to see happen in the world. Please try to work this into your presentation, but any and all submissions will be considered.

This call for papers is open to graduate contributors and established scholars from any department or area of research that relates to sexuality and gender. Strong undergraduate submissions are also accepted. Workshop Proposals related to community are welcome as well. All topics are welcome; however Queer U is especially seeking submissions dealing with the following topics:
-Queer/Trans* Diasporas
-Temporalities of Queer/Trans* Spaces
-Innovative looks at the Relationship Between Community and Identity
-Relationships Between Community and Wellness
-Anti-racist, Indigenous, and/or intersectional feminist approaches are encouraged!
-Intersections of Queer/Trans* Communities with Systems of Power

if interested, send in a short (300 word or less) abstract outlining the paper, presentation, and/or workshop to prideubc@gmail.com no later than December 20th, 2014. Please Title email Queer U abstract.

Call for Papers 2015: International Conference on Science in Society 1-2 October (Science Education)

SEVENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SCIENCE IN SOCIETY

Call for Papers

Proposals for paper presentations, workshops, posters, or colloquia are invited for the Seventh International Conference on Science in Society, held 1-2 October 2015 in Chicago, USA. We welcome proposals from a variety of disciplines and perspectives that will contribute to the conference discourse. We also encourage faculty and research students to submit joint proposals for paper presentations or colloquia. Proposals are invited that address science in society through one of the following themes:

Conference Themes

  • The Values and Politics of Science
  • The Social Impacts and Economics of Science
  • Human Impacts and Impacts on Humans
  • Special Focus: Educating Science

2015 Special Focus: Educating Science

At its most cogent and most productive, science is engaged, responsible, and accountable to the social world. It is integrally linked to agendas, interests, values, and ethical stances. These need to be declared and exposed to examination, just as much as science’s propositions about the character of the natural-physical world itself. A constant and searching investigation of human interests goes to the heart of the question of the social credibility and ongoing viability of science. Our focus for 2015, ‘Educating Science,’ is interested in how ‘science’ educates and is educated by the social world. Within this dynamic, how does the teaching of scientific methodologies help produce better students, citizens, and community leaders? And what are the feedback loops connecting science and the social worlds of teachers and learners?

Call for Abstracts: School vs. Memory – Conflict, Identity, Coexistence

Call for Abstracts for the conference “School vs. Memory” to be held in Prague, 10-11 October 2014.  See the website, http://www.schoolxmemory.eu

In Central European countries, a tension potentially arises between history education in schools and memory at the level of family, social group or community. Memory as a concept describing a plurality of modes of relating to the past has gained grounds both in the humanities and in social sciences. Memory replaces or complements traditional historical narratives. This conference focuses on memory from a didactic perspective. Our aim is to deal with questions such as What are the difficulties that result from the employment of memory layer into the traditional interpretative frameworks employed at school? How does memory layer arise and what are its sources? What role does the family memory play in the creation of historical consciousness? Where are frictions between family remembering and school history narratives formed and under what conditions do they vanish? And last but not least: What does the impact of this memory in the classrooms look like?

Internationalization in Education: Its Nature, Challenges and Possibilities in an Increasingly Globalized World

Internationalization in Education is being discussed and debated globally as universities compete for the best students and researchers expand their networks and collaborations across national borders. University reputation and rankings are influenced by the degree of international engagement and many institutions are responding to this imperative. Yet many concerns have been raised about the motives behind internationalization, its benefits and challenges, and the short- and long-term benefits of student and faculty mobility. This conference provides a forum for a critical examination of these and other issues arising from this powerful global phenomenon.

This conference, initiated by the Deans of Education of five partner universities in China, Australia and Canada, is intended to encourage research exchange and collaboration on topics of importance to educators from around the world, but especially of interest in the Asia-Pacific Region.

Brasenose College is one of the thirty-eight colleges that form the University of Oxford and was founded in 1509. We are pleased to invite you to become a member of this Round Table. Membership is limited to approximately thirty-five (35) interdisciplinary scholars who have a particular interest in this subject.

Twenty-two years ago, a highly successful Round Table was specifically designed to explore childhood education.  From this session several papers were selected that later formed the highly regarded book, The Education of Young Children: Research and Public Policy, Linton Atlantic Books. You are invited and encouraged to make a presentation and to provide a paper on a relevant aspect of the topic, however your participation as a member of the Round Table is not contingent upon presenting and you can serve on a panel or as a discussion leader. Papers presented at the Round Table may be subsequently submitted for publication in the Forum, a journal of the Oxford Round Table. Papers considered for publication in the Forum are evaluated by peer reviewers as to technical and substantive quality and for potential to make a significant contribution to new knowledge in the field.

Should you accept this invitation you will be joined on the programme by Hugh Benjamin (MEd in Drama and Education, Newcastle University, D.Phil, York University) is former Deputy Director of Stantonbury School Campus in Milton Keynes.  Most recently he has been involved in the national initiatives concerning the introduction of Vocational Diplomas and the Specialist Schools movement. He has been involved in educational consultancy work in Poland, Czech. Republic, Belgium and India. Dr. Benjamin returns to the Oxford Round Table for his fourteenth year.

Members of the Oxford Round Table have access to an array of academic, cultural and social resources, including the Oxford Union Debating Society, colleges and halls of Oxford dating back to 1204, museums, theatres, bookstores, college chapels, river boating, literary pubs, political clubs and may, on recommendation, become official readers of the venerable Bodleian Library of the University, founded by Duke Humphrey circa 1440 and refounded by Sir Thomas Bodley 1602. A free afternoon and evening will be available on Tuesday for independent travel to London, Stratford-upon-Avon, Bath, Stonehenge, Salisbury, Cambridge or many of the other cultural sights in England.

Topics of discussion will include:

Children’s Literature
