Call for Proposals: AESA / IAIE Joint Conference

The American Educational Studies Association (AESA) & the International Association of Intercultural Education (IAIE) joint
conference

October 29th-November 2nd,

2014 Hyatt Regency Toronto, Canada

Conference System open for proposal submission: March 1, 2014 (5pm EST).

Call for Proposals

For the 2014 annual conference the American Educational Studies Association (AESA) and the International Association of Intercultural Education (IAIE) will join forces to create a truly global community of scholars in one of the most diverse cities in the world. Each organization will follow a separate submission and review process that will unite into one multinational, multilingual program.

CONFERENCE THEME:

Reconceptualizing Diversity: Engaging with Histories, Theories, Practices, and Discursive Strategies in Global Contexts

The American Educational Studies Association (AESA) and the International Association for Intercultural Education (IAIE) are
presently accepting proposals for their joint conference “Reconceptualizing Diversity: Engaging with Histories, Theories,
Practices, and Discursive Strategies in Global Contexts.” Together we will provide a critical space for sociohistorical, political and
philosophical dialogues focused on reframing diversity within a global context. In particular, we are interested in submissions that address diversity as a multifaceted and dynamic idea as well as the structures that transform, maintain, and reproduce the many intersectionalities of identity. By focusing on colonialism, settler ideologies, capitalism, and neoliberalism, among other related topics we can resituate diversity in a global context.  Turning to issues of transnational immigration, cosmopolitan citizenships, and globalized knowledge networks, we might find new approaches to equity and social justice in education.

GENERAL CALL:

The AESA Program Committee for 2014 invites proposals on all topics
related to the broad field of educational studies including Social
Foundations of Education, its traditional scholarly domain. Proposals
may be submitted for individual papers, symposiums, panels, and
alternative format sessions through April 15, 2014. The committee
welcomes proposals from a full range of theoretical, disciplinary, and
interdisciplinary perspectives that include the following educational
emphases: social foundations of education, cultural studies of
education, curriculum theory and curriculum studies, comparative and
international education studies, and educational policy and
leadership. While all proposals of AESA quality are welcome,
especially encouraged are those that specifically address this year’s
theme, which will be highlighted in the program.

Submission deadline:

All proposals must be submitted electronically to the Online
Conference System (OCS) via the AESA website. It will open March 1,
2014 (5:00pm EST) and close on April 15, 2014 (11:59pm CST).
Participants are encouraged to plan ahead. Notifications of proposals’
acceptance or rejections will sent by July 15th, 2014.

ABOUT AESA

The American Educational Studies Association (AESA) was established in
1968 as an international learned society for students, teachers,
research scholars, and administrators who are interested in the
foundations of education. AESA is a society primarily comprised of
college and university professors and students who teach and research
in the field of education utilizing one or more of the liberal arts
disciplines of philosophy, history, politics, sociology, anthropology,
or economics as well as comparative/international and cultural
studies. The purpose of social foundations study is to bring
intellectual resources derived from these areas to bear in developing
interpretive, normative, and critical perspectives in education, both
inside of and outside of schools.

ABOUT IAIE

Since 1984 the International Association of Intercultural Education
(IAIE) has brought together educators and activists interested in
diversity and equity issues in education. This is defined quite
broadly, and includes among other topics, social justice, human
rights, pluralism in post-colonial, post-conflict and post-communist
countries, active citizenship, anti-racist education, migration and
indigenous minority issues, feminist and queer theory, bilingual and
multilingual language studies, ability studies, interfaith dialogue,
genocide and Holocaust education, and critical pedagogy. These topics
are also the focus of the organization’s Intercultural Education
journal, published 6 times a year.

Call for Proposals: Investigating Our Practices

Teaching is demanding and complex work, made more difficult if we try to do it in isolation or without sharing and exploring our understandings together. In order to better understand and improve our teaching practice, many of us engage in classroom, program or institution-based investigations focusing on the what, the how and the why of our practice.

On May 3, 2014 UBC hosts the 17th Annual IOP Conference, where practicing education professionals and students come together to share their questions, investigations and understandings about their practice.

The conference stresses dialogue among participants; presentations are intended to provoke and inform discussion. These exchanges typically fall within the following areas of inquiry:

·      the preparation of practitioners

·      the ongoing education of practitioners

·      the focus on classroom practice

·      the context of practice (e.g., social, political and cultural analysis of practice)

·      researching practice (e.g., teacher inquiry/action)

The Call for Proposals is now open. Proposals are submitted online and the closing date is March 3, 2014. We invite proposals in three formats:

·      Submit a proposal for an individual or group session. We want challenging, relevant, interactive presentations that showcase how you have been investigating some dimension of teaching practice. Session time should be divided equally between provoking discussion by providing access to your understandings and providing opportunity for others to discuss your conclusions.

·      Host a roundtable discussion. You have a critical question you would like to discuss with other practitioners and you are willing to initiate and moderate a conversation, perhaps based on your own experience or research.

·      Prepare a poster session. The poster format is ideal for the visual presentation of research results, a program of research or research activities of a group.

Internationalization in Education: Its Nature, Challenges and Possibilities in an Increasingly Globalized World

Internationalization in Education is being discussed and debated globally as universities compete for the best students and researchers expand their networks and collaborations across national borders. University reputation and rankings are influenced by the degree of international engagement and many institutions are responding to this imperative. Yet many concerns have been raised about the motives behind internationalization, its benefits and challenges, and the short- and long-term benefits of student and faculty mobility. This conference provides a forum for a critical examination of these and other issues arising from this powerful global phenomenon.

  • Reciprocity, equity and social justice
  • Cooperation for global human development

2014 AAACS Call for Papers

In a symposium entitled “Ethical Engagement among Communities without Consensus” AAACS 2013, Janet Miller and Bill Pinar emphasized the importance of a ‘shared community of dissensus’ for ‘complicated conversations’ in curriculum studies to take place. In this discussion, the notion of “engaged generosity” emerged that urged curriculum studies scholars who disagree to maintain an ethics of generous engagement and commitment to curriculum studies, its goals, and it underlying activism.

Taking Miller’s proposition seriously and considering the challenges of the current educational context, including aspects internal and external to the area of curriculum studies, the Executive and Conference Committees of AAACS invite curriculum studies scholars to engage with the potential difficulties, barriers, joys, and benefits of taking responsibility for creating such community and enabling such conversations. Drawing on contemporary thinking about democracy, otherness, knowledge/power, being, and beyond, we would like to explore how to create an AAACS disciplinary space that advances themes that are urgently pressing in a time in which curriculum studies is becoming increasingly marginalized.
