Call for Papers – Globalization, Diversity, & Education Conference

February 27-28, 2014

10th International Globalization, Diversity, and Education Conference
Activism and Education: Learning With(In) Lived Experiences.

Washington State University

Join us for the 10th Annual Conference and workshops February 27-28, 2014, at Northern Quest Resort in Airway Heights, (Spokane) WA.  This year we will focus on the theme of Activism and Education: Learning with(in) Lived Experiences.  This conference is committed to engaging activists, educators, and scholars from diverse disciplines in deep and meaningful dialogues around what we can do together to address and engage in alleviating and/or eliminating current social and environmental injustices in our local, national, and international communities.

Award-winning Seattle filmmaker Jill Freidberg spent two years in southern Mexico documenting the efforts of more than 100,000 teachers, parents, and students fighting to defend to country’s public education system from the devastating impacts of economic globalization. Freidberg combines footage of strikes and direction actions with 25 years worth of never-before-seen archival images to deliver a compelling and unsettling story of resistance, repression, commitment, and solidarity.

For over 20 years, global economic forces have been dismantling public education in Mexico, but always in the constant shadow of popular resistance…  Granito de Arena is the story of that resistance – the story of hundreds of thousands of public schoolteachers whose grassroots, non-violent movement took Mexico by surprise, and who have endured brutal repression in their 25-year struggle for social and economic justice in Mexico’s public schools

Proposal deadline: December 6, 2013

Paper and Panel Presentations:  Please submit your proposal clearly explaining the presentation and its relationship to the conference. What is the question or problem that is being addressed?  Who are the primary scholarly sources being drawn upon to frame the discussion?

Alternative Sessions/Workshops:  Propose something alternative to traditional conference sessions or host a workshop!  This should be a hands-on session dealing with an important issue related to the conference theme. Proposals should describe a) what the session will be about, b) what the objectives of the session are, and c) how participants will be involved.

To submit a proposal:

  • Use the attached form

CATE Polygraph Series

Good Afternoon CATE Folks

In 2009 CATE started a book series dedicated to research and scholarship on teacher education within the Canadian context: “Canadian Research in Teacher Education: A Polygraph Series”. The Series has the purpose of supporting teacher education practices and research in teacher education in and across Canada.

1.    The publications within the Series are themed books, creating a series that allows a focused contribution to the Canadian teacher education discourse and teacher education practice.
2.    The books will be polygraphs (‘polygraph’ = many writings) rather than monographs, to allow a range of scholars to contribute to the same theme.
3.    The series of volumes will be available in electronic form on the CATE website (https://sites.google.com/site/cssecate/home), allowing easy access and the quick publication of the respective Canadian scholarship in teacher education.

So far three volumes have been published, which can be downloaded from the following site: https://sites.google.com/site/cssecate/polygraph-book-series.

The CATE Executive invites you – possibly in collaboration with some of your colleagues – to consider a book publication in the CATE Polygraph Series within the area of your expertise as a teacher education scholar. The attached “Guidelines for Prospectus” document is to help you in the development of a prospectus for a book in the Series. For any preliminary inquiries, please feel free to contact me. Guidelines for Prospectus (June 2012)

Cheers

Conference – Graduate Students and Graduate Student Supervisors in Science Education

Dear colleagues in science education,

An important part of graduate studies (at both a master’s and doctoral level) is sharing your work and ideas with others.  Whether you are just beginning your graduate work and are new to conference presentations, or are very comfortable with the conference ‘scene’; we invite you to consider submitting a proposal to CSSE (Canadian Society for Studies in Education) through the Science Education Research Group (SERG) and / or through the Canadian Committee of Graduate Students in Education (CCGSE).

2014 Conference Details

24-28 May

Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario.

http://www.csse-scee.ca/conference/

Application Process

If you are a graduate student working in science education, you are eligible to submit a proposal to:

1) Science Education Research Group (SERG) AND

2) Canadian Committee of Graduate Students in Education (CCGSE).

This provides you the opportunity to give two presentations at the same conference, should you wish to do so.  Please note that you cannot submit the same proposal to both SERG and CCGSE.

In order to provide graduate students an open and welcoming environment for them to share their work, only graduate students can submit proposals to CCGSE. All submissions will be reviewed and feedback will be provided.  To find out more about applying to CCGSE, please go to http://www.csse-scee.ca/conference/

SERG receives proposals from graduate students and faculty working in science education.  Proposals will be subject to peer review and feedback on your proposal will be provided.

The deadline for proposals to SERG is November 27, 2013.   Graduate students should also note that there are graduate student awards available through SERG that assist with conference registration or other costs.  For more information on these awards or on how to submit a paper to SERG for CSSE 2014, please go to:  http://www.sergcanada.ca/

Personally, I had a great experience at CSSE last year.  As a master’s student at my first national conference I was initially nervous about applying and presenting, but I am so glad I did!  I presented my work at a round table session and it was a really valuable experience for me because I not only got to present my ideas and research, but I got great feedback and suggestions from the grad students and faculty that attended my session. If you would like to read about graduate students’ experiences at the CSSE 2013 Conference, we will be posting comments from grad students on our website in the following weeks. (http://www.sergcanada.ca/)

Please consider talking to your supervisor(s) about CSSE.  The conference is an excellent opportunity to share your ideas and research, find out about emerging research, and meet graduate students and faculty from across Canada who are working in science education.

Best wishes with your work and we hope to see you at Brock University in May, 2014!  We would also ask that you please forward this email on to colleagues who you think may be interested.

Sincerely,

Carol Brown
