First GSS Weekly Newsletter 2014!‏

Dear Graduate Students,

Warm wishes for a happy and productive new year from all of us at the GSS!

We know that you agree or strongly agree that funding/financial issues cause you as a UBC graduate student stress or anxiety on a regular basis. You know and we know that Time to Completion for graduate studies programs is continually increasing at UBC and across Canada. Despite the GSS’s best efforts, despite the fact that graduate students number 20% of the student body, we’ve seen little change. We would like to ask for your help.

Come out on Friday, January 10th at 11am to Graduate Student Society’s Thea Koerner House on 225-6371 Crescent Rd. Let’s show the UBC Administration that Less Money and More Time isn’t a good or sustainable way to treat it’s hardworking and talented graduate student body. Stand and be counted!

GSS Elections:
– The Call for Nominations for the 2014-2015 GSS Executive Team will remain open until January 15th! Are you interested in making a difference in graduate student life at UBC as a GSS Executive? Find out how you can get involved [here]

GSS Workshops & Conferences:
– Class is in Session! Learn French, and “Fall in love” in our January GSS Art Class.  Swahili is also being offered now via the UBC Linguistics Department.

– And, this Saturday, January 11th, 2014, UBC hosts the largest student-led conference in North America.  New this year are workshops run by and specifically for grad students looking for ways to expand their leadership skills.  Register to learn about how students, staff, faculty, alumni, community partners, are coming together from around the world to “be infinite” at slc.ubc.ca.

GSS Social & Recreational:
– Advance Tickets Now On Sale for our New Term Party on January 24th!

– There’s still time to Sign Up for your Term 2 Fitness Class! GSS is offering BellydancePilatesZumba and Yoga classes starting the week of January 20th! Do it now before the classes fill up!

– There’s still a slot for you to go to Whistler with the GSS on Jan 19!

– January 10th is January Orientation Day at the GSS!  We still need a few volunteers and welcoming folks to help! There’s tickets in it for you for the New Term Party…!

Finally, a warm Congratulations to UBC Faculty members and alumnae named to The Order of Canada. It’s a great way to start the year! So how will you “be infinite” in 2014?

Final GSS Weekly Newsletter 2013!!‏

Dear Graduate Students,

Did you know that Graduate students make up 20% of the student body at UBC, numbering just over 10,000 graduate students at UBC Vancouver alone?

There’s a more than 50% chance that you agree or strongly agree that funding/financial issues cause you as a UBC graduate student stress or anxiety on a regular basis. Time to Completion for graduate studies programs is continually increasing at UBC and across Canada.

The GSS wants you to come out in support of our efforts to change these aspects of the graduate student experience at UBC. While we have been a priority for this UBC administration for a number of years, little has changed across the institution.

Come out on January 10th at 11am to Graduate Student Society’s Thea Koerner House on 225-6371 Crescent Rd. Let’s show the UBC Administration that Less Money and More Time isn’t a good or sustainable way to treat it’s hardworking and talented graduate student body. Stand and be counted! (Save the Date!)

GSS Elections:
– The Call for Nominations for the 2014-2015 GSS Executive Team is Now Open and will remain so until January 15th of 2014! Interested in making a difference in graduate student life at UBC as a GSS Executive? Find out more [here]!

GSS Social & Recreational:
– Class is in Session! Learn French, and “Fall in love” in our January GSS Art Class.

– Sign Up for your January Fitness Class! GSS is offering BellydancePilatesZumba and Yoga classes in January! Remember, it’s not a New Year’s Resolution if you commit before New Year’s (We nonetheless offer love and acceptance to Resolution makers) Image removed by sender. ;-)

– Wheee!! let’s go Ski on Jan 19!

– The January Orientation Schedule is out and we need a few volunteers and welcoming folks to help! There are tickets in it for you for the New Term Party on January 24th! (save the date!)

Happy Holidays from us at the GSS! Here’s a holiday giggle with Jimmy Fallon! See you in 2014!!

Dec. 12 – Info Session in Richmond | UBC MEd in Technology Studies Education

THE PROGRAM

One of the most active topics of research at the moment, Digital Learning and Curriculum is spurred by the recent realization that, when it comes to technology, disciplinary knowledge (or content) of effective teachers is more a matter of understanding deep associations among familiar concepts than it is about taking more advanced courses in technology.

In a sense, this Master¹s program is focused on developing better understandings of what teachers already know seeking to enhance teachers¹ knowledge of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) not by studying more about computer hardware or software individually, but by unpacking concepts collaboratively (e.g., identifying and elaborating metaphors, analogies, applications, exemplars, gestures, and other experiences that contribute to the Œlife¹ of an idea).

Digital Learning and Curriculum is thus designed for those teachers who are seeking to enhance professional practice by developing their educational technology knowledge through collaborative study.

MED IN EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION & LEADERSHIP
Leadership, Mentorship, and Engagement for Contexts of Diversity and Indigenous Education (VEL4)

Begins April 2014 | Vancouver School Board

THE PROGRAM

The thoughtful practice of educational leadership in a context of school district change involves engaging with multiple constituencies – school and community-based. Constituencies hold conflicting social, political and cultural claims regarding the aims of education in a democratic and pluralist society.

Educational leadership is a situated ethical practice that extends the boundaries of schooling into the community by engaging with the social justice issues at stake.

This off-campus M.Ed. program offers a responsive, and engaging graduate program co-created with the Vancouver School District that allows participants to:

·       Prepare for a leadership role in their school or district.

·       Build relationships and interact with colleagues as part of a community of learners.

·       Engage in understanding, critiquing and improving educational policy and practice.

·       Explore the five competencies of 21st Century learning from the BC Education Plan through the lens of diversity and Indigenous education.

·       Gain a greater understanding of leadership and mentorship for social justice, diversity, inclusion, community engagement and Indigenous education.

·       Contribute to capacity building and professional capital through mentorship opportunities across the school district.

·       Reflect on the aims of education in a democratic and pluralist society.

·       Broaden their perceptions on school life and develop their thinking skills within a background of Canadian content.
