Submission Process
Presenters may submit individual, panel, and/or alternative presentation proposals. Proposals should
include the names of presenters, their affiliations, contact information, technological requirements, and
a brief description that outlines the proposed presentation. Individual and/or alternative presentation
proposals should not exceed 500 words (excluding references). Panel proposals should not exceed 1000
words (excluding references). The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual university in Canada.
Our two official languages are English and French. As such, we will review and accept proposals in

themes outside the conference theme are welcomed. All presentation formats are welcome. In order

Call for Applications for a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA): Qualitative
data analysis from a biology course.
Hours per week: 6-12 hours per week on average. The number can vary from
week to week, in accordance with the stage of the project and the availability of
the student.
Short background on the project: During the past term, qualitative data were
collected in an upper level biology course with the goal of gaining an insight into
students’ perceptions of their own learning, as well as to identify the kind of
“evidence” that students use to self-assess and determine what they have
learned. Forty-four students filled out learning journals at six time-points during
the course, and their journal entries comprise the current data set that needs to
be organized and analyzed.
Job description: The selected student will be in charge of developing,
documenting and implementing an appropriate data analysis protocol, provide
critical feedback on every aspect of the project, help educate other team
members about the protocol employed, and participate in the dissemination of
the results.
Qualifications: Experience and proficiency with qualitative data analysis,
experience and/or background in education research, knowledge of relevant
analysis tools (e.g., NVivo or Atlas), good communication skills, curiosity, ability
to work independently and as part of a small multi-disciplinary team (a biologist
and one or two quantitative science/biology education experts), patience,
flexibility, and ability to interact effectively with team members who have no
background in qualitative analysis.
Background in biology NOT necessary.
Time frame: Based on available funding, the position is currently for about 100
hours, but may be extended (start and end date are flexible).
Salary: $ 25/hour.

studies that measure effectiveness of the Math Educational Resources Wiki.
Supervisor:
The GRA will be supervised by Dr. Eric Cytrynbaum (UBC Mathematics Department) and will
report to the project team, led by Christina Koch (alumna, Mathematics), Bernhard Konrad,
Carmen Bruni, Iain Moyles, William Thompson and Michael Lindstrom (PhD Candidates,
Mathematics).

Position description:
The Math Educational Resources (MER) wiki is an online math learning resource developed
and curated by graduate students in the UBC Mathematics Department. We are seeking a
Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) to assist with the design of a series of studies evaluating
how students use the resource and the impact it has on their learning habits and their
understanding of mathematics. The GRA would then independently carry out, and analyze the
data collected from these studies. This position is ideal for someone familiar with mixed
methods and incorporating tools such as surveys, interviews, and google analytics. The GRA
will be responsible for all stages of the research, including design, implementation, data
collection, analysis and write up. This person will work with members of the MER wiki team,
instructors in the Mathematics Department, and staff from CTLT throughout.
Qualifications:
● Experience in education, psychology, or usability research
● Ability to work independently, while also coordinating with a larger team
● Keen about improving student learning at UBC
● Mathematical subject knowledge is valuable but not required
Position start date: June 1, 2014, or when filled
Position end date: April 30, 2015

Call for Submissions for the World Education Research Association (WERA) Focal Meeting which will be held from November 19 to 21, 2014 in Edinburgh, Scotland as part of the Scottish Educational Research Association (SERA) Annual Conference. This Call and the Submission system can also be found on theWERA website.
WERA is an association of international research associations aiming to advance education research as a scientific and scholarly field. Each year WERA hosts a Focal Meeting to highlight the work of international scholars and to facilitate thoughtful discussion on internationally significant education issues. The Focal Meeting consists of paper and symposia sessions, lectures, and other substantive activities in collaboration with the conference of a WERA member association.

To recommend a student for any of the awards described below, please provide the following:
(i) a letter of nomination (maximum two pages) from the Graduate Advisor, Department Head, or student’s supervisor. The letter must specify (i) why the nominee is eligible for award and (ii) qualities, etc., that make the nominee a strong candidate for award.
(ii) copy of nominee’s Canadian Common CV (use CGS Master’s version)
(iii) copies of all university-level transcripts to 31 December 2013 (print-out of Academic History from SISC is acceptable for UBC transcript).

A $6,000 scholarship has been endowed by the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association, Vancouver Section to assist graduate students who have an academic focus on Asia to undertake formal studies or project research in Hong Kong for a period of not less than eight weeks.
#165 Simons Foundation Doctoral Scholarship
(maximum two nominations per graduate program)
Two $5,750 scholarships have been endowed by The Simons Foundation to encourage women entering doctoral programs. One award is available in the humanities or social sciences and the second in science or applied science. The recipients will be outstanding women scholars with potential for significant contribution to society through achievement in their chosen field.

A scholarship of $1,650 endowed through a bequest from the late Chancellor R. E. McKechnie, is awarded on the recommendation of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies to a deserving graduate student at the University of British Columbia who is proceeding to a M.A. or M.Sc. degree.
#493 Effie I Lefeaux Scholarship in Mental Retardation
(maximum two nominations per graduate program)
One or more scholarships to a total of $1,400 are offered to graduate students working in the area of mental retardation. The funds are provided through a bequest from the estate of Effie I. Lefeaux.
#4436 Werner and Hildegard Hesse Fellowship in Ornithology
(maximum two nominations per graduate program)
Fellowships totalling $20,000 have been endowed through a bequest by Werner Hans Hermann Hesse for graduate students engaged in ornithological research projects, with preference given to those studying wild birds. Werner and Hildegard Hesses’ passion for wild birds was sparked in night classes on the ecology and conservation of birds at UBC and led them to become leaders in amateur ornithology. The Hesses conducted bird surveys in the Canadian arctic, compiled BC’s Christmas Bird Counts for over 20 years, and developed a special concern for the harmful effects of human development on bird habitats and populations. The Hesses delighted in funding ornithological research and, particularly, contributing to the long-term monitoring of population change in seabirds of the Pacific Coast.
#4817 Wendy Fan Memorial Scholarship
(maximum one nomination per graduate program)
A $4,250 scholarship has been endowed in memory of Wendy Fan. The award is offered to a student who is entering graduate study in either Science, Applied Science, Medicine or Commerce and Business Administration and who has received his or her undergraduate degree at an institution outside of North America.
#6475 Ibn Battuta Award for Field Research
(maximum one nomination per graduate program)
A $3,000 travel award is offered to a graduate student in any field of study who wishes to conduct field research in the following Muslim-majority countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Comoros, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Maldives, Mauritania, Morocco, Palestine, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Syria, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkey, Xinjiang (Western China) and Yemen. To be considered, graduate students must have a minimum overall GPA of 80% in their last two years of study. Candidates should also have completed at least one course in field research methods, or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge.
#6495 Andrew Nord Fellowships in Rheumatology
(maximum five nominations per graduate program)
Fellowships totalling $57,000 have been endowed through a bequest from the Estate of Andrew Nord. Andrew Nord suffered from the effects of arthritis from the age of 15 and the goal for his bequest is “to prevent the disease from its devastating onslaught, to find better ways to live with the disease, and to find the cause, leading to a cure once and for all.” Doctoral students engaged in rheumatology research in any faculty at UBC are eligible to apply for the fellowships.

Just 2 weeks after this catastrophe, Valparaiso, one of the South Pacific’s most important seaports, was swept by an enormous wildfire, leaving thousands of homes destroyed by the blaze.For this reason, the Chilean community of UBC is organizing a number of initiatives in which we hope you will participate. This wine raffle is one of those, and we wish to give all those interested the opportunity to help the most affected Chilean citizens.How can you help?Chilean Wine Raffle: the Chilean Consulate has donated a number of fine bottles of Chilean wine. By overcoming the constraints imposed on teaching in recent years, there remains the possibility teaching can be an improvisational art form that creates moments of intense beauty and joy. The importance of teachers seeking for beauty and surprise in the classroom is conceived as a necessary political response to the factory models that dominate current education policy.

The Instructional Skills Workshop is an internationally recognized program and students receive transcript notation for their participation. It is a 3-day intensive workshop that develops participant’s teaching skills and confidence. It is appropriate for first time teachers or those with years of experience.
