Hello BC Science Teachers!

Welcome to our EDCP 455 Resource blog for grade 9 science. In the posts that follow we have included a unit plan, a suggested lesson plan sequence and one detailed lesson plan for the earth science/ecology section of the new grade 9 BC curriculum. The Big Idea we are focusing on is: the biosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere and the atmosphere are interconnected and matter and energy flow through them.
We hope you find these resources useful!  Erin, Sarah and Greg

  1. Lesson Feedback:
    Stars:
-Lesson consisted of very helpful analogies (such as explaining the terms by comparing them to everyday processes, e.g.: fixation = prepare for use).
-Lots of circulation of facilitators to ensure everyone was on task and great time management.
-Great use of multi-modal media of delivering the lesson (poop, videos, flow charts, notes)

    Wishes:
Cognitive overload– there was not enough time to process the activity before making the charts. Need to perhaps split the lesson over two days—do the group chart the next day after students reflect on what they learned during the instruction and passport activity.

    Unit plan feedback:
    Stars:
Aboriginal perspectives are considered in planning the unit. Unit plan is well organized with student-centered learning which is aligned with the goals of new curriculum. Multiple opportunities for collaborative learning are present.

    Wishes:
Very little support given to ELL students or students with IEPs in lessons.
