Hi Parents,
Welcome to Ms. Chen’s Mandarin website.
The main focus of Mandarin study in Term One is:
- Based on learning of Pinyin initials and finals in previous years, we start to practice complicated syllables in Mandarin, such as Overall Recognition Syllables （整体认读音节), such as yi, wu, yun, and three-part syllables (三拼音节), such as ia, iong, uang.
- Based on various strokes learning in Grade 2, we start to learn commonly used radicals (常用偏旁) and understand how radicals were used to form groups of characters (word families)
- Practice listening and speaking through daily routines, class instructions, children’ rhymes and become familiar with some basic sentence patterns
Some learning routines:
- Students are encouraged to take Mandarin duotangs back home on weekend. Please remember to bring them back to school next Monday.
- Dictation on radicals is conducted every two or three weeks. The dictation list is in your child’s planner. The list and other resources can be found here as well.
- The radicals with star are foundation ones. Your child may choose to memorize foundation radicals or all radicals. Please respect your child’s choice:).
- Every year we have one or two students who have learned a lot in advance. So a List of Example characters is prepared only for their reference.
