Ponderings…

  • Clarification of identity
    • Would this better equip students for the 21st century society?
    • Would students start veering away from traditional curriculum and pedagogy?
    • Would this veering away emphasize a trending ‘loss of respect’ for academia and/or the value of academia?
  • How do we asses:
    • transformational learning?
    • better understanding in the concept of self?
    • the non-concrete, conceptual
  • Divergent thinking a form of ‘innovative thinking” (Oh dear, haha)
  • Self-awareness, the ability to articulate the self

Note to self: Need to discuss with Psych colleagues to develop further…

Individualized Curriculum (Senior Stream?)

Teacher takes into account S’s identity. They try to identify strengths and weaknesses as well as learning styles and personal interests of their students.

Possible Adjustments

1)         ‘Iron sharpens Iron’ mentality Model

  • Students get into ‘interest-based’ small groups, and within those groups is where they remain seated for the semester (summative work).
  • ‘Free-for-all’ for majority of classroom activities

Brainstorming, graffiti, fishbowls, and other group activities in-class will be mixed. At the beginning of the semester, students will undergo interest-grouping activities, and group themselves (in table groups) for the semester. They will stay in these groups all semester (so choose wisely). All summative work (essays, tests, quizzes, assignments, projects) will be done in these groups.

2) ‘Illusion of Choice’ Assignment Model

  • Teacher would see multiple pathways of exploration and alternative methods in      learning specific content. Normalize the notion of offering an array of methods versus just one.
  • Teachers will have prepared multiple ways for students to explore and represent their knowledge. Given the assignment, a few options will always be present for Students to choose which method they would like to present their knowledge.

Assessment rubrics will need to be made for each medium, and must stay consistent. Video, essay, short story, script, article, blog could be considered for project/assignment submission.

Intrinsic Motivation

Purpose      (students feel content is meaningful)

Mastery      (students are able work at their craft to develop a sense of mastery)

Autonomy  (freedom of how to accomplish tasks)
