Building and Community Stream research has focuses on spatial simulations of policy alternatives for local governments and practitioners. The findings of the community stream subprojects reveal that solutions to address province-wide GHG emissions in the built environment will need to address conditions across many community types (urban to suburban at high, moderate and lower densities), not just in major transit-oriented urban centres more familiar in the best practices and research literature. To that end, we have analyzed the spatial characteristics of BC communities of different sizes, growth rates and geographic and climatic contexts, developing a set of nine urban form archetypes.  Concurrently, we have developed a replicable and scalable community energy simulation methodology to evaluate the effectiveness of energy and emissions interventions in different BC community types. In parallel we have identified instructive international case studies demonstrative of best energy and emissions policies and practices that are relevant to BC.
