Home, About me

Hello and welcome to my e-portfolio! My name is Elias Braunstein, I’m a GIS professional and a recent university graduate with a bachelor of science degree in the environmental sciences from the University of British Columbia (UBC). I’m originally from San Francisco, although I love to travel around the world and have lived in Vancouver and Spain. My passions range from GIS and promoting environmental awareness, to snowboarding and exploring different types of music. This blog is meant to showcase my work as a young GIS professional and as a student at UBC. Please click on the sidebar to learn more about what I’ve done, or click one of the links on the sidebar menus to be taken to directly to one of my pieces of work.

My introduction to GIS came during my time at University, where I spent 2+ years taking GIS courses that were offered by the Geography department and integrating GIS into my studies. The Geography courses laid the foundation of my GIS knowledge and opened my eyes to how useful, applicable and cool GIS is. I was given the chance to conduct research projects on topics that are interesting to me (such as quantifying the effects of land-use change around the San Francisco Bay) and begin to make use of skills that I had been introduced to in the classroom. The links to each piece of work can be found in the sidebar menu on the left under the “Academic Research Projects” page.

Upon graduating at the end of 2018, I got the chance to work as a GIS analyst at Milliman Watkins Property and Casualty Consulting Practice in San Francisco. During my two years at Milliman, I worked on many interesting projects relating to modeling catastrophe risk and residential flood risk in the United States. Working at Milliman allowed me to use the understanding of GIS that I learned from school and further refine my skills, workflows and finished map products. I grew a lot at Milliman, and am excited to bring my skills onto the next opportunity that awaits me! Please click “GIS Analyst With Milliman” on the sidebar menu to learn more!
