Subject: Best 10 LinkedIn Practises

Hi all,

Here is a list of the best practices for using the professional networking site LinkedIn. The site has a number of ways in which users can connect with potential employers in order to find a job in one’s preferred career field.  I have included these from the perspective of a student who may not have much work experience to include in a LinkedIn profile.  Below are the top ten best practices I was able to find in order to help make the most of the site.

  • Use an appropriate professional profile photo
  • Include a concise introduction of yourself
  • Summarize volunteer work or extracurriculars
  • Use the UBC alumni search tool to create connections
  • Take the time to write short personalized messages when adding a connection
  • Join groups in order to discuss ideas and grow a network
  • Request recommendations to add validity to work history
  • Post content such as articles, videos and job postings
  • Keep your information up to date
  • Follow companies and organizations you are interested in

Overall, this list should allow a student user to create a profile that appeals to a potential employer while also offering incentives for those who may be recruiting in one’s chosen field.

Best of luck,

Adrianna
