Below are ten practices for effectively using LinkedIn as a networking site:

 

  1. Maintaining a LinkedIn profile with relevant experience and qualifications that appeal to the target audience (Schaffer).
  2. Including industry-related keywords in the profile to improve Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and search visibility (Lincoln).
  3. Creating a custom profile URL that is personalized and presentable (Lang).
  4. Connecting with LinkedIn users such as familiar individuals (Prasad), employees from organizations of relevant industries (Mind Tools Content Team), and people who viewed your profile (Schaffer).
  5. Posting informative content to demonstrate professional knowledge and interest in the target industry (Balkhi).
  6. Participating in LinkedIn groups to discuss industry-related topics while making connections (Clark).
  7. Asking previous employers for recommendations and endorsements (recognition of skills) to gain social proof of professional abilities (Schaffer).
  8. Sending customized notes with connection requests to encourage positive responses (“How to write compelling LinkedIn connection request messages”).
  9. Viewing a company’s page and employee profiles to learn about the business while possibly encouraging company members to view your profile (Schaffer).
  10. Using LinkedIn’s Advanced Search to effectively explore job opportunities and to filter results by characteristics such as companies, location and industry (Mind Tools Content Team).
