Subject: Progress Report: Reducing Food Waste at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital

Intended Audience
This Formal Report will be addressed to Jessica Loyva, General Manager of Food Services at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital.

Purpose
The purpose of this report is to evaluate the efficacy of current food waste reduction methods at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital among other healthcare facilities and provide recommendations to Jessica Loyva for further food waste reduction.

Significance
Food waste is one of the major forms of waste that comes out of healthcare facilities every day. Although systems are in place to reduce food waste, there is always room for improvement. Food service managers have an extremely tight budget to follow, so throwing away food is something they want to avoid as much as possible. Further reducing food waste at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital will not only be beneficial for the environment, but also save time and money.

Methods

  • Primary data collection via a survey targeted to food service managers: Link to Survey
  • Interview with Jessica Loyva to gain insight on current systems at Mount Saint Joseph: Interview Questions
  • Review of past waste audits at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital
  • Secondary sources will include reviewing existing research on food waste reduction

Research Plan
Problem:

  • Identify areas where food waste occurs in healthcare facilities
  • Identify current food waste reduction methods and their efficacy

Primary research methods:

  • Survey distributed to healthcare food service managers
  • Interview with Jessica Loyva
  • Review of past waste audits at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital

Secondary research methods:

  • Review of online published research on food waste in healthcare facilities

Recommendations:

  • Propose recommendations for food waste reduction at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital based on findings from primary and secondary research
