Subject: Peer Review of your Definition of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
Enclosed is feedback regarding the three definitions submitted explaining the term oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
Initial Impressions:
- The explanation of an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in an easy to understand.
- The explanation is full and satisfies my questions as to the role of this type of surgeon.
- The structure flows logically and is impactful; after reading the definition, it is very clear that an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is a specialist in the dentistry field for non-routine concerns regarding the head, neck, jaw, and mouth.
- Within the first paragraph of the expanded definition, a reader is able to have a clear picture of this type of surgeon. The remainder of the definition including the surgeon’s academic requirements, examples of cases that this surgeon would address as well as a guide through what to expect when a client is referred, was successful in further understanding the roles of this surgeon.
Comments about Purpose:
- An impeccable job of defining the purpose of writing, including introducing the assignment and outlining a typical scenario that would occur in a dental office.
Comments about Audience:
- Although medical definitions can be difficult to comprehend, these definitions are successfully delivered to a non-technical audience, allowing an understanding on a more broad level. This was achieved by avoiding other technical terms in the explanation.
- The targeted audience aligned with the actual purpose of the document; to define a term to peers with several academic backgrounds.
Suggested Changes:
- The majority of the definition is delivered in a future tense, however paragraph 2, sentence 3 in the expanded definition changes to the present tense. This may appear confusing as it took a moment to realize the reader is meant to be the client with the lesion.
- The definition may have more impact if it is kept in a future tense overall, rather than playing out the scenario in one sentence.
Additional Comments:
- Using the etymology of “oral and maxillofacial” was a very useful approach and a critical component to understand the concept for the remainder of the definition.
- While the introduction clearly identifies the situation of a tongue lesion on a client, the definition does not directly address or use the graphic to further explain the topic.
Overall Impression:
- The definition is written straightforwardly, without overcomplicating a topic that can otherwise be technical.
- The structure and organization of the writing is coherent and easy to follow.
- This work could be approved by an editor with only minor revisions.
