Research on how to best utilize LinkedIn has been conducted within the distance education course ENGL 301 at the University of British Columbia. LinkedIn is a valuable social platform that allows professionals from across the globe to connect. Listed below are ten best practices for growing a professional network on LinkedIn.

• Choosing the right profile and background images to create the best possible first impression
• Writing the summary as a brief but significant insight into the person behind the profile
• Listing relevant skills to provide further substance to the profile, but keep the list concise
• Endorsing connections and reach out to those who’s endorsement would really be of value
• Requesting written recommendations from supervisors to be showcased on the profile
• Adopting qualities from other profiles that resonate with the message you wish to convey
• Including images and videos to capture or direct viewer’s attention
• Making use of analytics to find trends and patterns among connections
• Sharing relevant professional or personal content that adds value to the network
• Commenting on content shared by peers and respond to all comments received

In conclusion, a significant way to grow a professional network on LinkedIn is to maintain relationships with current and future connections.
