Subject: 301 Formal Report Progress Report:  Proposal for improving the road planning of Guixi Park to enhance the motivation of the community to the park

 

Purpose and Significance of the Report

The purpose of this report is to provide recommendations for improving the planning and construction of Guixi Park. The significance is to enhance the ease of access to the park for residents of the Guixi community and to improve the experience of wandering through the park.

 

Target Audience

The proposal will be submitted to the Chengdu Planning and Design Institute, the designer of the current version of the project (Guixi Park). The staff of this department is responsible for the planning of most of the city’s community parks as well as the city’s overall ecological green space planning. As such, they have a clear understanding of the focus and significance of the community park design and the importance of the project to the Guixi community. They also have the authority to make substantive changes to the planning and construction of the park.

 

Objectives of the Report

1. Find out the current level of participation of community residents going to Guixi Park.
2. Identify the nuisances that the current planning and design of Guixi Park causes to residents’ access and play.
3. Provide cost-effective recommendations for solutions to increase residents’ use and experience of Guixi Park.

 

Methodology

1. Primary data collection will be done through an online questionnaire distributed to the public service section of the community forum and random interviews with visitors at the park. Since this project was not targeted at UBC students and staff, Survey Monkey was used to create a survey for all users who saw the post. 2. Secondary data will include：
   1. Basic Requirements for Urban Park Construction prepared by the Chengdu Municipal Government, the Chengdu Urban Park Management Standards, and the 14th Five-Year Plan of Chengdu.
   2. Online access to current academic articles related to urban park planning through the UBC Library, and excellent case studies of community park planning in other cities around the world.

Research Plan

For the purpose of a comprehensive analysis of the current problems of Guixi Park and its improvement measures, I plan to：

1. Analysis of collected data
   • Frequency of Guixi community residents’ visits to various community parks, including Guixi Park
   • Satisfaction of Guixi community residents with the construction status of Guixi Park
   • Suggestions of Guixi community residents and visitors in Guixi Park for park improvement measures
2. Secondary Research Analysis
   • A study of the basic requirements for the construction of urban parks.
   • A summary analysis of academic articles on urban parks .
   • Communication with the head of park design of Chengdu Planning and Design Institute to analyze the general urban planning of Chengdu city.
   • Analysis of excellent case studies of urban park construction in the global context.
3. Proposed solutions and feasibility discussion
   • Analysis of the pros and cons of the proposed solutions.
   • Cost-benefit analysis of the proposed solutions.
4. Discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the solution based on primary and secondary research
5. Risk overview

The following is my writing schedule for the next several months.

1. October 29: Formal report outline/formal report progress report
2. November 1: Research and report on primary data collection
3. November 5: Create an initial report using research data
4. November 16: Submission of the draft formal report
5. November 19: Peer review of the draft formal report
6. November 22: Peer review edits of the draft formal report
7. November 26: Final version of the formal report completed
