Subject: 301 Progress Report: Reducing E-waste in Yellowknife

 

Purpose and Significance of Report

The purpose of this report is to provide recommendations for alternate electronic waste receptacles around the city of Yellowknife in order to limit the spread of potentially hazardous chemicals into the surrounding water and ground systems.

 

Intended Audience

Yellowknife Mayor and GNWT Department of Infrastructure 

Report Objectives

The objectives of this report are:

  • To determine the extent of consumer-related electronic waste that is making its way into the landfill 
  • Determine the knowledge residents have of options for disposal and potential for community exposure
  • Determining knowledge residents have of potential exposure to hazardous chemicals found in electronic waste 
  • To confirm feasibility of changing the current site of disposal 
  • To confirm current standards surrounding the disposal of electronic waste 
  • To confirm feasibility of switching from current ingredient sources to more sustainable ingredient sources
  • To provide recommendations on changes to the current disposal of electronic waste as well as municipal and government communication to the public
Methods:

Primary data collection through an online survey targeted to local residents. Attached below is the link to the survey questions being used to gather data for this report:

Secondary sources will include researching electronic waste disposal in other small municipalities, including guidelines for waste management, as well as feasibility to changing of sites and  techniques to inform the public of potential health risks associated with unmanaged e-waste

Research Plan
In order to analyze feasibility and provide effective recommendations, I plan to:
  • Consolidate secondary sources 
  • Data analysis on surveys
  • Identify areas of 
  • Identify facility recycling fee costs 
  • Research means of informing residents of potential health risks
  • Create visuals based on survey data

    • Nov 12: Complete analysis and recommendation
