Subject: Formal Report Progress Update
As outlined in the requirements of Assignment 2:3 I have completed a progress report for my research project. I have addressed all of the required areas of inquiry below.
Audience:
This formal report is addressed to Vancouver’s Seniors’ Advisory Committee and ultimately Vancouver City Council. Seniors’ Advisory Committee is responsible for advocating for seniors living in Vancouver. Their aim is to ensure and enhance the access and inclusion for seniors. The purpose of this report closely aligns with their established mandate. Therefore, they would be essential in creating a channel of communication to council and appropriate messengers relaying the findings and recommendation highlighted in this report. City council oversee many of the municipal programs and initiatives that cater to senior related issues and concerns and thus are the ultimate target audience of this report. They have significant power and have the potential to address the concerns and implement the recommendations highlighted in this report.
Purpose:
The purpose of this report is to evaluate factors limiting community engagement and social connectedness among seniors, in order to develop a comprehensive guideline that outlines effective strategies to promote and sustain seniors’ involvement in their communities. This report will provide insight on how to effectively promote community engagement among seniors and subsequently how to fight the adverse effects of social isolation.
Significance:
Seniors are an integral part of our society and are crucial in creating and sustaining healthy and vibrant communities. Promoting community engagement encourages seniors to actively participate and contribute to their communities. This mobilization of seniors is extremely beneficial to the development of community initiatives and programs. Additionally, comprehensive review of current community engagement strategies and their subsequent improvement will serve as a proactive and preventative approach to addressing the many other seniors related social and health issues. This is beneficial to society as a whole as it reduces the burden on government funded programs, shelters and non-profit organizations.
Research Plan:
- Define and identify the problems by using literature references and examples
- Begin with primary data collection:
- Create a standardized survey with purposeful questions related to the scope of this report.
- Distribute surveys to seniors.
- Interview Brightside’s community engagement coordinator with a planned set of questions inquiring about specific challenges affecting community engagement among seniors.
- Collect all completed survey responses at a predetermined ‘due date’.
- Compile list of secondary resources exploring community engagement practices and determinants of social isolation for review and reference.
- Visualize and analyse collected primary data
- Complete 1st draft of report and provide for editing via the peer review process.
