Legal requirements for the provision of enrichment in zoos in Canada

There are no legal requirements for the provision of enrichment in zoological institutions in Canada; however, voluntary standards are in place for zoos that choose to implement them.

  • CAZA (Canada’s accredited zoos and aquariums) is a private charitable organization representing the country’s leading zoological parks and aquariums. It is also committed to the advancement of accredited zoos and aquariums as humane agencies of animal welfare, conservation, science and education.
  • CAZA requires all members to review their use of animals in the zoological institutions and develop policies and procedures for each types of activities that the animals are involved in. Polices should include general housing, husbandry, animal health concerns, provision of enrichment, visual cover, etc.
