September CoP Meeting Summary

During this month’s CoP meeting (see agenda here), we saw a demo of WebCT 6 in the e-portfolio context.

Background information:
Some of our pilot projects are currently using WebCT’s **Student Presentation Tool** as a tool for students to build e-Portfolios. The Student Presentation Tool provides students with their own webspace to store artifacts. The instructor usually provides a one-page e-Portfolio template so students can build their e-portfolios following the template structure.

Currently the Student Presentation Tool is a separate tool in WebCT CE 4. It does not link with the My Grades Tool or the Assignment Tool. In the next version of WebCT CE, the Student Presentation Tool will be incorporated into the Assignment Tool, and thus, will also link with the My Grades Tool. This [case study](./private-docs/ce4_vs_ce6.pdf “Case Study”) compares the process of creating a e-portfolio course in WebCT CE4 and CE6.

Below are some notes I gathered during the demo:

* WebCT will be releasing a e-Portfolio module for CE6 next year (expect beta version around February 2006.)
* In CE6, students will have access to their own **Content Manager**
* This basically gives student access to their own file manager (a private webspace/storage in WebCT.)
* The Content Manager will be separate from their courses.
* System administrator can set different storage limit for different roles (i.e. students, designers, instructors.)
* It supports automatic WebDAV so students do not need to set it up manually on their computer.
* Students can also upload multiple files at once using the web interface.
* It also provides a WYSIWYG HTML editor for students to create HTML files.
* Instructors can use the **Group Manager** to generate groups for collaborative group work.
* Students can share discussion board, chatrooms, and files in the group.

Some new features in the next version of WebCT CE 6:

* Peer review
* Active Learner Tool – to track learning goals
* Rubric Builder
* Weblogs
* Wikis

The group expressed interest in continuing with software demos in the next few meetings. Our next CoP meeting will be Oct. 26th and we’ll plan a 20-minute demo of one of the following tools: OSPI, ELGG or Keep Toolkit. Also, at our next meeting, we’ll move forward with some of the visioning we did as a group in the summer. Please review the summary Kele handed out at the meeting. Identify the priorities for for the next 2 years and think about how we can put those priorities into action.

Here’s a copy of the summary if you missed it…Download file

KEEP Toolkit v1.8 Experience

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching upgraded the KEEP Toolkit to version 1.8 earlier this month.

What’s new in this version?

  • Add Video Tool – upload video to snapshot easily.
  • Template Gallery – choose from a list of templates created through collaborations with KEEP Toolkit’s partner institutions and programs.
  • Advanced Stitching Customization – personalize stitched group with new advanced style and layout options.
  • Gallery Tool – lets you create galleries of Snapshots by multiple authors quickly and easily.

My Experience…

Add Video Tool
Users can now easily include video files in their snapshot. Any user can upload multimedia files to their portfolio just like how they would upload an image file. The video will appear as a customized link on the snapshot. The user can also choose to upload a thumbnail image to serve as the link to the video clip.

Template Gallery
Users can now choose from a variety of pre-design templates using the template gallery. Templates are divided into three categories: SoTL Templates, Case Study Templates, and Blank Templates. Under each category, users can view a thumbnail image of a template and see an example of the template as well.

Advanced Stitching Customization
In the previous release (version 1.7), the KEEP Toolkit introduced a new feature which allows users to combine (or “stitch”, as the KEEP Toolkit named the feature) multiple snapshots into one snapshot. By stitching multiple snapshots together, users can easily combine various snapshots together into one. The KEEP Toolkit will automatically create a navigation menu to the stitched snapshots to offer easy access to different snapshots. However, there were very limited choices for the navigation menu in version 1.7: users could only choose from a horizontal or a vertical navigation menu. Version 1.8 pushes the stitching capability to another level by allowing users to customize the look and feel of the stitched snapshot. So I was able to personalize a stitched snapshot and make my navigation menu orange.

Gallery Tool
Aside from the previous addition of the Stitch Tool, the Gallery Tool is also added to this version. This tool “lets you create galleries of Snapshots by multiple authors quickly and easily. Select the Snapshots you wish to include in the gallery, and the KEEP Toolkit creates a single page with links to the Snapshots and contextual information. You also have the option of including automatically generated thumbnail images of the Snapshots in the gallery.” I created this gallery page to explore the new tool. I personally like the generate thumbnail features which allows me to include a thumbnail image for each of my snapshots.

Educause Webcast: Current State of e-Portfolios

by Trent Batson
Website: http://www.educause.edu/LIVE0513

The core value of e-Portfolio is *student ownership*

–> eventually lead to life-long learning

Uses for e-Portfolios:

# Individual reflective portfolio
# advising management system
# resume builder
# faculty portfolio
# showcase portfolio
# identity development portfolio
# assessment management

Motivation coming from: School of Education

Work retained by students in an Assessment Management System; produces reports through aggregations of these students’ portfolios.

National e-portfolios (workforce portfolio):

* for life-long learning
* documenting/record experience one has
* more than the academic community

*The e-Portfolio Market*

# iWebfolio
# Folio
# e-Portfolio – Chalk and Wire
# FolioLive – McGraw Hill
# WebFolio Builder – TaskStream
# College Live Text
# Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium
# True Outcomes
# Masterfile e-Portfolio Manager – Concord
# Angel e-Portfolio – Angel Learning
# Blackboard
# TK-20
# OSP 2
# efolio — Avenet

*Implementation Models*

# subscription – students buy an account on a remotely hosted portfolio for a resume-builder
# subscription plus installed by client on site
# open source
# buy the license and support services

*Which have Assessment Management Systems:*

* nuventive, with Trac Dat
* Chalk and Wire, with Rubric Marker
* TaskStream
* College LiveText
* True Outcomes
* OSP 2.0, r*smart [reporting tools in 2.1]
* Angel [reporting tools in next release]

*Cautions*

* Market shake out
* Should enterprise e-portfolio be hosted off0campus?
* Is open source as sustainable at the application level as at server level?
* Demand and expectations ahead of market
* No definitions; no standard e-portfolio lexicon
* e-portfolio for life makes it harder to switch
* portability: can keep student files in a university digital repository, but may lose:
** comments
** association with learning goal
** and perhaps permissions
* check for compliance with IMS e-Portfolio specification 1.0

*Tips*

* It will all mean nothing if students aren’t taught how to do “folio thinking” and how to build an e-portfolio
* and will succeed if faculty use the production of e-portfolio as the main project in the course
* student ownership

Facilitator’s Guide to Reflection and Portfolio Development

Dr. Helen Barrett points out that there is a new resource on the Saskatchewan Learning Website

A JOURNEY OF SELF-DISCOVERY: Facilitator’s Guide to Reflection and Portfolio Development (PDF)
This guide has been developed to support facilitators as they lead learners through a process of thinking about what they know and can do (reflection). Through involvement in these activities, learners identify the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they have developed, and create evidence of their learning. These general activities are intended to be adapted by facilitators to meet the needs of any group.

This is a useful resource for designing and facilitating e-portfolio and reflection assessments.

Upcoming e-Learning event: Designing Online Assignments

Tuesday, June 14th, 2005, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM, TAG Seminar Room

What would you like your students to learn? This is the first question you need to ask yourself before starting to design an online assignment for your students. A clear pedagogical reason and objectives will help you decide what types of assignments will be the most appropriate for achieving the prescribed goals. There are a number of different tasks you can ask your students to accomplish: participate in an online discussion, complete the online test/quiz, write an essay, do a literature research or simulation, etc. A few key elements, common for any type of assignments, should be taken into considerations in order to make your expectations clear to students, as well as help you manage your own time.Session Details:
