Size:

  • 1-1.5 m wide

Form:

  • Dense, clump-forming
  • Upright, then arching culms (fountain-like in form)

Soil & Water requirements:

  • Moist, well-drained

Exposure:

  • Full sun to part shade

Leaves:

  • Leaves are slender, giving the plant an overall elegant and delicate look
  • Green leaves contrast with the purple culms
  • Leaves curl when the plants needs more water; but will return to normal if the plant is watered
  • Tight growth
  • Evergreen

Flowers:

  • Synchronized flowering worldwide; unique
  • Flowers ever 120 years or so, and recently flowered

Maintenance:

  • In the spring weak, dead or damages stems can be removed; this helps showcase the purple culms better
  • Cut out flowering shoots as soon as they appear, if you want to prevent additional plant growth

Suitable uses:

  • Can be used in the landscape without a container or concrete barrier, but is a good container plant
  • City courtyard gardens
  • Hedging or screening

Other:

  • Climbing bamboo; much better behaved than a running bamboo
