Form:
- Dense, clump-forming
- Upright, then arching culms (fountain-like in form)

- Moist, well-drained

Leaves:
- Leaves are slender, giving the plant an overall elegant and delicate look
- Green leaves contrast with the purple culms
- Leaves curl when the plants needs more water; but will return to normal if the plant is watered
- Tight growth
- Evergreen
Flowers:
- Synchronized flowering worldwide; unique
- Flowers ever 120 years or so, and recently flowered
Maintenance:
- In the spring weak, dead or damages stems can be removed; this helps showcase the purple culms better
- Cut out flowering shoots as soon as they appear, if you want to prevent additional plant growth
Suitable uses:
- Can be used in the landscape without a container or concrete barrier, but is a good container plant
- City courtyard gardens
- Hedging or screening
Other:
- Climbing bamboo; much better behaved than a running bamboo
