Hello from Vancouver

Hello all, my name is Adrian Wheeler. I am not an educator, rather an IT professional working for UBC’s faculty of Medicine. More specifically I help research, test, integrate and support a wide range of teaching technologies for the faculty and specialize primarily in videoconferencing. Through this program I am hoping to expand my knowledge of pedagogy and learning theory so that I can bring more value to my faculty and department. ETEC 522 will be my 6th course in the MET program and I am excited to learn with you!

In my free time I work on electronics projects such as modifying and restoring gameboys, building gaming computers and building custom mechanical keyboards. In addition, I am an avid photographer and enjoy shooting both old film cameras (of which I own far too many) and modern digital cameras. Your photography is lovely, Adrian.

I hope you don’t but, I wouldn’t mind taking advantage of your video conferencing expertise for a moment. Do you have a favourite videoconferencing platform for recording multiple individuals on the conference, where all parties show up in the video recording, not just the person speaking?

      Hi Erica,

I work primarily with large scale solutions that integrate with our videoconference bridging system and technology enabled rooms. For that purpose Mediasite and Panopto are industry leading and offer everything from multi-stream recordings that allow the student to select which stream they wish to watch, to AI powered transcription and real time search.

If however you are looking for a small scale solution to record a VC from your laptop I would suggest OBS or Zoom’s own local recording function (obviously only if using Zoom).

Thanks Adrian. I’ll take a look at OBS. My issue with Zoom at the moment is that it only records the person speaking, unless there is something that I am missing there.

    Hi Adrian,

Beautiful shots of the Koerner library and the Earth and Ocean Science Building! Do you find more staff and faculty members are at ease now utilizing video conferencing tools and was there a steep learning curve for everyone? Looking forward to learning with you!

      Thanks Rachel!

The abrupt transition to online delivery was quite a challenge for most, fortunately were were already doing a fair amount at the faculty of medicine so our professors made the transition quite well. Regardless its been a very busy six months for my team haha.

    Hi Adrian,
You seem to get up to some fun hands-on tinkering projects! So cool. It must be pretty fascinating to work for UBC’s faculty of Medicine and specialise in videoconferencing. I’ll think of you if I ever need photographs of my bands (I have a band in Vancouver and L.A.) Of the 6 MET courses you’ve taken, what would you say is the most valuable to your learning? I’m trying to plan my program as this is my first course.
