Brit Morin – Founder of Brit + Co

Brit Morin is the founder and CEO of Brit + Co, a media company that empowers females. Their mission is to “ignite the creative spark in women”. This e-commerce platform provides content, virtual classes, products and connects users to build a community of creative individuals. The company was founded in 2011. They raised $1.25 million seed funding in April 2012 and $6.3 million in Series A funding, led by Oak Investment Partners. In 2015, the company received $20 million in Series B funding, led by Intel Capital. The funds allowed Brit + Co to acquire the Snap Guide app which is a free iOS app that allows users to create step-by-step “how-to guides”.  Topics include cooking, gardening, crafts, repairs, do-it-yourself projects, fashion tips, entertaining and more. Brit + Co reaches over 130 million people each month.

According to their site (https://www.brit.co/about/) Brit Morin’s creativity was fostered when she was a child. She had an urge to start her own company base on the quote “Turn your passion into your career and you’ll never work a day in your life.” She considers Martha Stewart as an inspiration. Her desire to create motivated her to empower people to harness their power of creativity. Brit + Co was born as a destination where real women could go to get inspired and educated on how to be creative.

Brit + Co has partnered with dozens of businesses to showcase a more creative lifestyle. Some of our key partners have included: Lowe’s, Target, IKEA, Johnson & Johnson, PepsiCo (Lay’s Wavy & Quaker), Triscuit, Skyy Vodka, Starbucks, Old Navy, JCPenney, Motorola, Google, KIA, FedEx, Clorox, Michaels, Jo-Ann’s, Hallmark, Sephora, L’Oreal, Hulu, OXO, method, Gymboree, and Amazon.

Brit + Co’s co-founder, Anjelika Temple oversees that bring Brit+Co’s stories to life. The company has over 100 employees and as of 2019, due to financial issues, they have only 52 names listed on their website. Their team seems to be highly dynamic and thrive in a creative setting.

Brit’s story resonated with my own entrepreneurial potential as I, too love creating something out of nothing. I admire her ability to harness her own creativity to empower more individuals to be creative. Creating a space that becomes positive feedback on a community is truly remarkable.

Brit Morin is an inspiration for any inspiring entrepreneur hoping to make it big in the tech sector. She landed in Silicon Valley after answering an ad on Craigslist that led to an internship and eventually a job at Apple. She worked under Marissa Mayer at Google but this was only the stepping stone for her own company. After 4 years at Google, with 6 months of savings, she quit and set out to start a business. Today she is the founder of one of the largest digital media in the world. Her organization produces hundreds of pieces of content for women each month that reaches of over 175 million fans. She is an role model for those willing to take the risks to build a tech company from the ground up.

“Turn your passion into your career and you’ll never work a day in your life.” I really like this quote and also admire Brit Morin could put her wish into reality. I browsed through the website and had the feeling that I was reading a combination content from a few magazines: “The Canadian Living”, “House and Home”, “Today’s Parent” and “Reader’s Digest”. I can see that the website would attract more and more women viewers since there are very practical yet interesting content. Don’t know if the website add a products promotion category would bring more profit to the company?
