Christal Wang, Co-Founder and CEO of Shimmer, was inspired to launch the company after her own experience navigating an adult ADHD diagnosis and struggling to find affordable support. Rather than creating another productivity tool, Wang identified a real-world problem and developed a solution grounded in user needs. Personal Reflection
Christal Wang’s entrepreneurial journey highlights how personal experiences can inspire meaningful innovation. As an instructional designer, I am particularly interested in how technology can be used to support diverse learners and improve accessibility. Her work demonstrates the importance of combining empathy with design and technology to solve real problems. This analysis has encouraged me to consider how my own experiences and professional skills could be applied to create impactful learning solutions in the future.
Christal Wang seems like a very strong role model for entrepreneurs. Her conception and development of Shimmer in response to her diagnosis is commendable; not only did she immediately recognize a pain point and build a solution, she did so while dealing with the challenges that her product would eventually help with.
Besides that, Shimmer leverages a growing societal understanding that there are people around us with invisible afflictions. This app may not have succeeded 15 years ago, but the increasing attention to neurodivergence in the last decade or so has provided a window into a variety of potential tools to help people with these diverse needs. With her diagnosis, Wang clearly saw this opportunity and built a tool to help people like her. Her story is definitely inspirational, thanks for sharing it!
Not just a great role model for young entrepreneurs, Wang is a role model for everyone. Transforming a personal challenge into an opportunity to help others is inspiring. She identified a need and market for available support services and created a solution. Her focus on people and building a venture with a meaningful social purpose is what we need more of and she definitely is a great role model for young entrepreneurs!
What I like about Christal Wang’s story is that the idea for Shimmer came from her own experience rather than from trying to chase the latest trend. It sounds like she saw a problem that affected her directly and realised that many other people were facing the same challenge. To me, that’s often where the strongest ideas come from. I also appreciate that she didn’t just build another app and hope it would solve everything. Combining coaching, educational resources, and technology suggests that she understands how complex ADHD support can be. It feels like she was focused on helping people first and then used technology to make that support more accessible. I think she shows the importance of listening to real user needs and building something meaningful around them.
