Hi from Sunny Guangzhou!

Hello,
I’m Pascaline and I come from the beautiful island called Mauritius. Currently based in Guangzhou China, I’m working for British Council in the Education and Exams department.
Ten years ago, I started teaching English as a second language teacher at a University in Shanghai. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work in both private and public schools/training institutions. The applications of technology in teaching, learning and testing interest most. This term, I’m doing two modules, 4th and 5th. My aim is to complete my masters by September next year. Below is a short introduction to my home country.

    Hi Pascaline,

I enjoyed reading about you and learning about Mauritius. I shared your video with my family and we have definitely put this destination on our bucket list – once the new norm becomes more normal. I look forward to working with you on Assignment 2 – it should be lots of fun!

    All the best!
    Jamie

    Hey really cool video,

I worked in Asia for 5 years and visited China, but never made it to Guangzhou. Excellent video, really great way to describe a place in a short period of time.

      Hi Benjamin,
Asia is an exciting place to live, work and travel. Were you teaching in Asia?

    Hi Pascaline,

Nice to meet you! I really enjoyed learning about Mauritius through your awesome video. Video Scribe is such a neat tool. I’ve been thinking of making a video using it but have never tried yet… You need to pay for it, right?

I lived in Shanghai for three years. Love that city! Looking forward to learning together 🙂

      Hi Ceci,

Shanghai is an interesting place and probably the most westernized city in China. It will always be a special place for me as I met my husband there. As for Videoscribe, it is not free but you can get a free trial for a week. I advise you to download the free version and to play around with it. If you are still interested, then you could get the software for free from the UBC software distribution on canvas.

      Hi Justin,

The world is indeed small. Some of my colleagues and friends are also in the same situation waiting for the borders to be open again. I hope that this will happen sooner rather than later.

Hi Pascaline, Nice to meet you! I actually have a student from Mauritius, she arrived in Canada last year. Winter was a little bit of a shock to her last year. It sounds like a very beautiful country, we have talked about it quite a bit, but thank you for sharing the video, it is always great to learn more.

      Hi Michael,

Yeah, I bet your poor student found it hard to acclimatize. It was the same for me when I left my little island years ago and the city where I studied wasn’t as cold as Canada.

Yeah, I am sure she struggled her first year, but I did check in on her regularly and she definitely started to enjoy it. I got to hear about her first snowman she made and even her first snowball. It has been very cool.

    Hi Pascaline,
It’s nice to see someone who’s currently in mainland China and also doing the same course together from the same time zone 🙂
“British Council in the Education and Exams Department” is that the department for IELTS? I have mixed feeling about this test because almost every single one of my students have to take it at least twice or up to six times before they can apply to colleges or universities. ????
Looking forward to studying with you in this course and maybe some other courses in the future.

      Hi Jane,
The Education and Exams Department deals with all sorts of tests including IELTS, ACCA, APTIS, A-levels and so on. We also help and guide students if they plan to study in UK. It’s nice to have some classmates in the same time zone this term.

Hello Pascaline, it’s awesome to see another classmate with an ESL background! Thank you for sharing about your home country of Mauritius. I didn’t know much about it it except for when I met a lovely woman from there on my first trip abroad, and we spent several days exploring the great city of Lisbon and chatting about our lives. Best to you this term, and I look forward to learning alongside you!

      Hi Mel,

ESL is a significant field within education. It is definitely big in Asia and the Middle East. Hopefully, we’ll get to work together this term.
