To Echo a Few Others: Hello From Vancouver!

Hello everyone,
My name is James Seaton and I am a secondary math teacher living in Vancouver’s Olympic Village and working in beautiful West Vancouver.

This is just my third ETEC course, so I’m still working on achieving that balance between work, grad school, and everything else in life (so much of which is on hold at the moment).

I’m excited to be taking this course at such a unique time in education, where so many of us have been forced into remote teaching situations. I am looking forward to collaborating with all of you as we navigate this course and the ways we can apply what we learn to this ever-evolving world we live and work in.

To add a little information about myself, all of my immediate family attended UBC. My parents met there, and that’s also where I met my wife, an urban planner with the City of Vancouver. She grew up in Europe and still has family in London, Slovakia and Croatia, so we often travel out that way. Last year, she planned a family trip that my parents and sister’s family joined (my feature picture is my niece Audrey and I in Dubrovnik). We spent time in Croatia (Split, Bol and Dubrovnik), Vienna, Košice (Slovakia), Budapest, and Prague. It was absolutely amazing, and I constantly dream of taking off to Europe once we’re again able to travel freely.

      Hi Katlyn,
Looking forward to learn along side you as well (and to share any recommendations for those destinations if needed *hopefully in the near future*)

    Hi James,

I totally understand what you mean about finding that balance between work, school, and life… but the closer you get to the midway point, the better it feels. You get into the rhythm and just keep going.
I must say I am very envious of your European travels and have been dreaming of escaping there myself when I can. I went to Zurich for a 2-week teaching exchange and absolutely loved every minute of it. I cannot wait to go back and explore other parts of Europe.

Good luck with the course, and I look forward to learning with you this term 🙂

      Hi Binal,
It sounds so nice being at the midway point – or beyond – but that’s still a year away for me. I guess that’s good in a way – something to look forward to.
A 2-week teaching exchange sounds amazing – what program did you do that through? My wife and I have toyed with the idea of me applying to an international school in Europe (she attended a British International school in Prague) once we have kids, so who knows what the future holds.
For now, I’m just looking forward to learning more about mobile learning with you and the others. Good luck to you as well.
