Introduction – Stephen Michaud

Hi! My name is Stephen Michaud, this is my second term (third course) in the MET program. I joined the MET program to get a better educational and pedagogical background in ed-tech. I have worked in ed-tech for the last 15 years and I am current the Senior Manager, Learning Applications, Integrations, and Analytics in the Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Technology at UBC (boy that is a long title!).

Prior to joining UBC I have worked at:

So, after so many years on the vender side of ed-tech, I finally passed through the looking glass over to the University side. I am eager to put all my experience in ed-tech into a more pedagogical context. I have a strong background in user centred design and design for mobile and I look forward to seeing how a deeper understanding of pedagogy will influence that experience.

Hi, Stephen! I used WebCT back in the early 2000s with my senior physics classes, but abandoned it as the current infrastructure of mobile devices hadn’t yet been invented. Sigh. Google Classroom now performs most of the functions for which I was using WebCT. I’ve gone back to the future.

My favourite project would have to have been the adaptive learning project I worked on with a few others as a start up. Our company was eventually bought by D2L (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYeCjbMCALI) it was big data, machine learning, and digital assistant all in one!

Hi Stephen! What a wealth of knowledge you bring with you. Can’t wait to hear your perspectives on what emerges here. Do you have go-to blogs, accounts, or publications you like for current trends in ed-tech?

Thanks lyndsay! I look forward to working with you as well! I follow a whole rafter of twitter accounts and find myself on https://www.edsurge.com/ or https://www.insidehighered.com/ often but my real go to are Phil Hill (https://philonedtech.com/) and Michael Feldstein (https://eliterate.us/).
