Hi everyone, I’m happy to meet you in this course. This is my final semester in the MET program, and I’m completing courses 9 & 10. I am an administrator and teacher, and this year I teach English First Peoples 11 and AP World History, but since 2005 I’ve taught many of the available humanities classes in grades 6-12. I teach in Kelowna, BC, and live in Lake Country where we are hoping for a less active fire season this summer. This weekend, we spent Mother’s Day paddleboarding on Kalamalka Lake, seeking to give my wife and mother of our 2 children a great day. I think we pulled it off.
I’m quite happy about this course’s mobile aspect and the goal of thinking beyond the confines of a school building. I’ve spent a lot of time battling mobile devices in the classroom, as I know many have, and the idea of flipping the script to harness their power is very attractive. One of my objectives in this course is to embrace mobile technology in a way that is beneficial and possibly entrepreneurial.
Hi Steve,
A day of paddleboarding sounds lovely! Did everyone have a good time?
I enjoy paddleboarding with my dogs…I have only attempted to bring one dog at a time, but this summer I may attempt to bring both out with me! I will mentally prepare that we may fall in once or twice, or a few times…
I don’t think I am able to add a photo to my reply, otherwise I would share one!
At your school, is there a school-wide policy for mobile phones? Or are instructors left to individually manage the use (or non-use) of mobile phones?
Hi Shannon – that’s funny, our dog insists on coming along paddleboarding too.
We have a school-wide “away for the day” policy, however enforcement is difficult.
Hi Steve,
Great to meet you and thank you for your colorful introduction!
Sounds like a great Mother’s Day on the lake. It is hard to believe it is only mid May and it already feels like a July heat dome!
It will be a good summer to stay inside studying:)
Best of luck in the course!
Thank you for the response! Yes, might be some heat coming our way. I’ve appreciated the rain today though.
Hi Steve,
Nice to meet you! It sounds like you have a lot of experience in the education field. Paddleboarding on Kalamalka Lake for Mother’s Day sounds amazing—I bet it was a fantastic day for your family.
I share your enthusiasm for exploring the potential of mobile technology in education. It’s exciting to think about how we can turn a challenge into an opportunity. Looking forward to learning alongside you and exchanging ideas on how to effectively integrate mobile tech into our teaching practices.
Cheers,
Pankaj
