Hi Wendy, what a beautiful introduction! It is so eye-opening to hear about your experiences with your Indigenous community. Thank you for sharing!
It appears from the pictures that you have a lot of hands-on exercises and engaging trips/experiences with your students.
Do you think mobile learning poses any threat of reducing these interactive trips? And/or does it offer further opportunities for knowledge retention activities, or videos that reinforce the learning from the field trips?

Hi Wendy – beautiful pictures! I enjoyed listening to your introduction. I think when we can hear someone’s voice, it gives us much more information about a person and invites us to interact. I will try to follow your lead and include some audio in my posts this term if possible. I agree with Meg that ETEC 521 is an amazing course – I would say it’s the one course in all of MET that really puts you in a position to question your own perspectives and biases, but also helps you feel like you’re doing something about them. That was a really hard course for me emotionally and personally, but I learned so much!

Hi Wendy! Great intro – I experimented with audio recordings in two of my previous courses and realized how much more I like listening than reading!! If you have the opportunity to take ETEC 521, it’s an amazing course that deals with Indigenous perspectives, technology and access. I just completed it and it was a wonderful experience. I look forward to hearing more of your teaching experiences.

Thanks Meg! I have ETEC 521 on my list of courses I want to take. Sounds like it’s really worthwhile. Looking forward to working with you!

Hi, Wendy! Super cool to hear you taught in New Zealand! I had the pleasure of spending a month in New Zealand with my family in 2009, and I have wanted to go back ever since.

Regarding your comment on the difficulty with mobile learning for your indigenous students, sadly, I can say (from what I know) that is mirrored here in the United States. One of my good friends and his son live on the Quileute reservation in Washington. Due to the reserve’s geographical isolation and limited technological resources, since the onset of the pandemic most of his son’s education has had to occur at a family member’s house over an hour away. Luckily his family is nearby and happy to help support their grandson’s education, but for many families I am sure this kind of solution is not an option.

Also, this may be a technological issue on my end, but your audio recording cuts out around 50 seconds right as you begin to talk about your objectives. I’m interested to hear what they are! If the full recording shows up for you (or anyone reading this) please let me know and I’ll troubleshoot why it isn’t for me.

Hi Dana – the entire recording worked for me just now.

Hi Dana! Sad that so many students in our Indigenous communities have the same struggles. Maybe we can find ways to improve this. Not sure what happened with your audio – I just said that I’m hoping to find ways to better support our students who struggle in various ways with mobile learning. Looking forward to working with you!
