Week 7: Mode-bending

For this task I changed the mode of the “What’s in your bag” task from week one. The purpose of the previous task was to provide a visual and textual representation of a day in my work life. In the previous task, I used a photograph of my work bag and the items in it and explained in text what I used the items for and what they say about me. This week I focused on audio and created a narrative collage of the sounds that define my typical workday. The audio piece begins will an alarm and follows my journey to work by ferry, the communication technologies I interact with and support at work, and ends the day with my walk and return home.  The piece supplements the image and text from task one and provides an audio representation of a day in my life.

    Hello Charles,

I really enjoyed your audio. It is really smooth, I am a new to audio editing so mine was a little bit choppy. I was able to Imagine all the items you use during your daily routine. I actually scrolled down to see if I got them all right. There is a black and yellow item, which I am not sure what it was. I did not hear the sound of the bottle but there was a the sound of liquid being poured. I am guess that you were pouring coffee into the bottle. There is a pair of swim goggles in the pic, did you add that to the track too? I am guessing that it would not have been easy to record yourself swimming.

Great job, even without pictures I was able to imagine all the items that were used for this piece.

Thanks so much, Silvia! Yep that was my morning cup of coffee. It was rainy that day, so I didn’t make it to the pool for a swim. Rather than focusing just on the items in my bag, because I wasn’t sure if they were all interesting enough for audio, I decided to record snips of the audio of my daily tasks and technology to compliment the items from task 1.

I really enjoyed listening to your task too! Not sure if you recorded it in one go or edited it but it sounded seamless to me. Loved the sound of pencil on paper in your notebook 🙂

I found this this task interesting as I had never really thought of objects only by the sounds they made. And it was interesting to think about what a day in my life would be like if only represented by audio.

      Cheers!
