As Dr. Shannon Vallor suggests in her speech, “AI is an accelerant. It will fuel whatever social dynamics already exists”. To come up with my speculative narratives, I decided to look for inspirations in technologies that already exist, and integrate that with solutions that I want to find to the problems that I face in my daily life.

Speculative Technology: AI that decodes brain activities in babies.
A tired mom of a one-year-old baby who cries all day and doesn’t sleep receives a Christmas present from her best friend. The present is an AI machine that decodes the brain activity of babies who cannot speak. The AI translates the brain waves into images of what the baby is thinking, so the caretaker can quickly identify what the baby wants or needs. The machine is easy to use and only involves putting the device on the side of the head by wearing it on the ear. It transmits the translated message wirelessly via an APP. Since babies cannot speak yet, the image accuracy is still only at 60%, but it presents three choices in image forms so it decreases the stress of the mother by decreasing the time required to figure what the baby wants. Since using this AI device, the mom can now put the baby to sleep quickly by identifying that the baby wants to read a book, hug her favourite stuffed toy, and move the blanket that was making her itchy. The mom can be more comfortable with leaving her baby with a nanny who will be able to identify the baby’s needs better, so the mom can focus on developing her career.
