Bonjour from Vancouver!

Hello Everyone,

My name is Amy Kim and I am a secondary Core French teacher for School District #36 in Surrey, BC. My husband and I have two children; a very active three year old son, who loves to drive us up the wall and a two year old daughter, who has yet to learn to sleep through the night. Although sleep deprived and feeling very rusty after having taken a long hiatus for my maternity leave, I am looking forward to once again learning, sharing, and growing together with my fellow peers and instructors in the MET program.

For this introduction, I decided to take a photo of the whiteboard in my classroom. Growing up I recall my teachers writing on blackboards using chalk, which was later replaced in the 90s with the more hypoallergenic whiteboard. Lately however, I often leave my whiteboard untouched as we shift into the digital age and go paperless in the classroom. As the years go by, I find that fewer and fewer of my students are able to read my handwriting on the board, as some of my students have told me that they no longer learn this “art” in elementary school. As a result, I have typed most of my lessons and project them on my board, complete with images and music to make it more engaging. Students no longer write down notes, using the traditional pen and paper; rather they take photos or videos and “share” it with their peers in group chats. It leaves me to wonder how text will evolve in the future. Will we eventually revert to images and sounds to replace text?

I look forward to connecting with everyone this term.

Cheers,

Amy
