Pre-Digital Communication Timeline

Wow!  Are we really reaching the end of ETEC 540!?  What a journey. After we finished our documentaries I found myself plunging down a YouTube rabbit hole watching all of your amazing videos. After about the twelfth video I thought someone (probably me) should create a compendium of the videos that my classmates are willing to leave posted on YouTube. I thought of using products like Kizoa or Adobe Spark to create a video compilation but I wanted to leave your videos intact in their entirety and a 300+ minute video would be too much.  Then I stumbled across the idea of creating an interactive timeline.   Initially I planned to use Sutori, which has amazing teaching applications but it only provides yearly and institution plans. So I decided to use Tiki-Toki and overall I am very pleased.

Tiki-Toki allows the user to create traditional looking timelines that provide many creative functions like imbedding video, audio, images and links to external content. It is very easy to use and visually very appealing. I recommend it to anyone creating educational or professional time lines. I have already used it to create a roadmap of the upcoming year for my new students.

For the Pre-digital Communication Technology timeline I decided to create mini-stories for each documentary and by drawing from your scripts I was able to place your individual story along the continuum in the (approximate) correct time frame. I included a caption from your videos and also managed to include screen shots of important images.   It was a very time consuming but your captivating documentaries made it very enjoyable. There is a lot of great teaching and creative talent in this class!

Here is a link to the timeline.

Some tips for navigating the Tiki-Toki timeline.

  • The viewer can switch between 2D mode and 3D mode. I preferred 2D mode because the relationships between technologies are more apparent.
  • I have divided the technologies up into 4 regional categories in order to prevent story congestion.
  • The timeline is also loosely divided into the major time periods in the history of communication.
  • I have included some important milestones, such as the development of the alphabet, in the timeline for context.

This is of course a representation of all your hard work and so please if you have any concerns, questions or suggestions feel free to contact me directly. (jamietooze@shaw.ca) Once the assignment is graded I would be happy to remove any individual stories from the timeline if you wish – just let me know. I only plan to share the link to the timeline on this UBC blog and on the Mattermost Forum unless someone offers us a publishing deal. 😉

Once again thank you for your assistance and helpful feedback so far.  It was a pleasure working with you and learning from your hard work.

Enjoy the rest of your summer.
