First, I chose this image because we are currently doing an inquiry into ‘How we express ourselves’ with media. These children are work-shopping with me as they chose to express themselves via digital media at this point in their inquiry (other students in our grade are work-shopping with other “Teacher Experts” in our collaborative team in other forms of media that the children are interested in exploring further). The project incorporates text through brainstorming, as well as imagery and text with storyboarding. The classroom learning pictured here has been shared via Twitter, which in its micro-blogging platform, challenges users to succinctly craft their text in 140 characters or less using social media technology. All of the above, combined with students “Evernote-ing” their scenes to the cloud through mail (via text) and upload options with technology, makes up for my amalgamation of the text embedded into the sub-title of #etec540.

Intro:

This is my 6th UBC MET course, having taken 500, 510-512 and 530 before this. I’m slow rolling my courses in that I take only one per semester (aside from my first two) so that things stay manageable.

Aside from my MET life, I’m a Year 3 PYP IB Educator at an international school in Suzhou, China (just west of Shanghai). This is my second year in China, having spent almost a decade in Korea before.

I grew up in Windsor, Ontario. Studied business in Sydney, AU, worked in finance for a bit back in Windsor, then decided it wasn’t for me. I began my teaching career in ESL in Seoul, then solidified it in NZ for my teacher training and did some teaching there before working for an international school back in Seoul.

As for family, pictured below is my wife and a three year old son. Interests outside of teaching and learning include mountain sports, scuba diving, tennis, badminton and road biking. I do like my craft beer and whisky, too 😉

Included here is a recent family photo taken this past summer (winter?) in Sydney:

  1. Hi Justin,
First, I’d like to comment on what an engaging activity and learning experience for your class! Thanks for sharing it here.

This is my 7th MET course and like you I also choose to take 1 per term due to availability of time I can commit. This course is going to be quite different to my other courses especially in its delivery and member interaction….atleast that is my impression so far. All the best and I look forward to reading your posts on this blog.

    Cheers,
    Julie
