Hi, my name is Faye Thompson and I’m a 3rd year Exchange student from the University of Manchester, England, over here for one year. I’m completely new to this whole blogging business, so I just hope that I am doing this right!
I have decided to talk about one of my favorite adverts… I’m unsure if you guys have this over here, but back in England it was a pretty big campaign based for Adidas Original clothing and footwear. The reason I like this advert is because I think its entertaining, and it portrays Adidas not only as just a sports apparel and footwear company, but it makes you want to wear Adidas products as a fashion statement, and makes you want to be like those people in the advert.
The following link will take you to the advert I am referring to
Adidas Originals – the street where Originality lives
Most people are probably aware of Adidas, and its recognizable logo of 3 stripes, which has been built up over a number of years. The logo has taken different forms, from the original 3 stripes appearing on footwear to make them instantly recognizable, then when Adidas entered the apparel sector in the late 60’s, a few years later the ‘Trefoil’ Logo was introduced, designed to represent the ‘Diversity of the brand’. The following symbol used were the three stripes meant to represent a mountain, indicating the ‘challenge to be faced and the goals to be achieved’.
All of the symbols that have been used to markt this particular rand are equally effecting in telling the comsumer something new about the brand, without really saying anything.
The reason I chose this advert is because I think it shows how a company can connect with its target audience without really advertizing their product, but looking more at a lifestyle that the consumer should buy into. Adidas Originals is the brand group that focuses on lifestyle and fashion, whereas Adidas Performance continues to market towards the athlete.
The most noticeable aspect of this advert is the unbelievable celebrity endorsement that is involved. With names from David Beckham, Snoop Dog, Ian Brown, Noel Gallagher, Agness Dean, N-Dubz, Whitney Port, Ciara just to name a few, there is someone to appeal to all audiences. The scene looks to be one pretty good party, one I know I’d love to be lucky enough to go to so I could be that close to some of those people! The slogan at the end reads ‘Celebrate Originality’; in such a well known international brand, they have managed to incorporate the idea of individuality and uniqueness, within the ‘Originals’ community that is shown in the advert by all the different people from different backgrounds coming together to have fun and enjoy themselves and celebrate Adidas, the brand.
For this reason I think its a very effective way, not to focus so much on the product but to really market the values of the brand. The values that I would say here would be things such as fun, music, friendship, freedom etc. (of course its different for each person when they watch the advert and see how it makes them feel). After this advert aired the downloads of the song went up a lot, and it was played on music channels, all with the association of the brand. Adidas, just like Nike, have a strong brand loyalty, and understand that they need to add value to their products, by selling a particular lifestyle it entices the consumer to buy into this.

m going to talk about a predominantly english store called Marks & Spencers. The reputation it holds in england is a high end retail store, selling Food and Drink, clothing and home products.
M&S food
The food is actually amazing!! And taste even better than it looks in this advert.
Because this advert has become so iconic in England, the song and the womans voice is instantly recognizable! There have been a number of spoof adverts made.
M&S don’t just do food as I mentioned, they have also branched further into clothing and home products. There newest collection of adverts that have been showing over the past year or so have included some big celebrity endorsement from supermodel Twiggy, to Danni Minouge. Not only this, they are also famous for the gorgeous girls in underwear who have made appearences in each seasons advert. (M&S are actually the number 1 provider of womenswear and lingerie in the UK)
2009 Clothing Advert
The slogan of the brand for a while now has been ‘your M&S’. Having recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, the marketing focus of the brand was too emphasis the fact that M&S is your company. Your company that will ensure that you are receiving the quality you deserve. They are all about the customer. In all honestly, they do have an extraordinary customer service program, which i think is one way in which they have managed to reduce the negative word of mouth. Those people who do shop there, often become very brand loyal. They pride themselves on being ethically, socially and environmentally responsible. M&S also is able to appeal to a range of different ages, the main market being middle age women. In itself ,M&S operates like a large department store through its diverse product range. Most things you could want you can usually get in one of their huge stores!

boys binge drinking
girls binge drinking
So the two links above are both the boys and girls anti alcohol campaigns.
The reason I’ve chosen to highlight this particular advert is because we, as students are the target market of this campaign, and I’m sure we all as students have either witnessed someone we know looking a lot like this, or (although we may not admit it) have been in this situation ourselves!
The way this advert is done is clever in a way it can appeal directly to the target group. Clearly a great deal of thought and planning has gone into this concept so it grabs the viewers attention and affects thier view.
No matter how you choose to look at this advert and the people in it, it does make you think about yourself on a night out. The whole point is to encourage young adult to ‘know your limits’. Unfortunately this is something that many people around our age don’t know, and we fail to recognize until we wake up the following morning in a similar state to those in the advert!
The whole issue is of course a very serious one that can lead to many deaths, the two example adverts are just a few in an entire campaign to try and encourage people to drink responsibly. By portraying the issue in a less serious, more relatable way, more people are likely to take notice and be influenced to control their binge drinking.
