Inquiry Abstract

This inquiry outlines cross curricular teaching and the effect it has on student learning. Specifically, it questions how to incorporate STEM subjects, history, and social justice into the Physical Education and Home Economics area. The significance for me in this topic is because I think that these two electives don’t get enough credit and by highlighting the benefits that inherently happen perhaps teaching opportunities that are often missed will be minimized. Student learning can be maximized because the  elective classes are often designed as practical applications of the theoretical knowledge from other classes. During my practicum, this project will have to take place on a much smaller scale than I had initially hoped. Once I have the opportunity to grow it, I foresee this project as an interdepartmental endeavour. The idea will take extra work from teachers and department heads to  decide exactly how to implement the program. Ideally, it would start off smaller and grow organically to fit the needs of the students and school. I would test it out by collaborating with one or two other teachers for one unit first. I would informally poll students to see what their satisfaction levels are like and whether they feel they are learning anything. If I can make it feel like they aren’t learning anything because they’re having fun, then I will be satisfied. Paying attention to overall test scores will indicate how well the students are retaining information and making connections between the practice they get in the elective courses and their core subjects.
