Welcome to my grotto.
This is where I’ll be posting material, thoughts, assignments and links related to my class: ETEC 565A.
Photography is my passion. I really enjoy technology and teaching, but photography is something I have been keenly interested in ever since my parents bought me my first camera, a Nikon FM that was produced the same year I was born.
Back then they were afraid it would be a passing hobby, and it was not easy for them to shell out $750CDN (~$1800CDN in today’s currency). Thankfully I stuck with it, and fell in love with it, and have had so much fun with it since.
I nearly majored in it for my undergrad studies, but the practical side of me won out, and I majored in English Lit. with the intent of becoming a teacher.
However, and even though the digital revolution kept me from my hobby for a while, the flame of interest, passion, and excitement was never snuffed out. Now that I’ve been out of teaching for a while, and have had some time to reflect, I’ve decided to combine what I’ve learned in my teaching career (and in the MET program) with my passion.
My ultimate goal after I complete the MET is to create a curriculum for teenagers on Photography. Some of you may be rolling your eyes and saying “What? Another book on the craft?” To which I can reply: “Yes!”. But this one will be written with teenagers in mind.
Photography is often seen as a hobby, and is seldom taught in a way that approaches it with principles, and those are two big reasons it is rarely found as a course in high schools. Isn’t photography expensive? It can be, but to teach the principles not much money is required, specially with the tech that’s available, and often for free!
