This study sought to address the following research questions:

  1. What initiatives have been undertaken to measure the health of Canadian communities and what measures and approaches have been used?
  2. What initiatives have been undertaken in other relevant countries (i.e., US, Europe, Australia) to measure the health of communities and what measures and approaches have they used?
  3. How can community-level health indicators be distinguished from other types of health indicators (i.e., individual-specific indicators)?
  4. How are community-level health indicators presently being incorporated into policy and program decision-making through shared responsibility and collaborative actions across sectors?
  5. What lessons for policy making and program planning can be learned from examining the collection of community health indicators in Canada and elsewhere?
