Toyota

Toyota is once again the world’s best-selling vehicle brand. What is the secret behind Toyota’s success? A blog post by McComb School of Business give insight to this secret. According to the post, Toyota managed to balance the company’s strategic goals while extracting maximum effort out of every employee by managing the variety, velocity, variability, and visibility of its supply chain. On top of that, the car maker embraces a humble attitude which prevents it from getting complacent with its success and is constantly learning and improvising. This results in their ability to think in the long term, and deliver value to both customers and themselves.

This ability to think in the long term has been illustrated in the production of the Toyota Prius, the firm’s first hybrid car. When it was first produced, the gas prices in the United States were only $1.50 a gallon. However, Toyota was able to think long term, and the Prius became a breakthrough vehicle for Toyota, giving it a commanding lead in hybrid technology. As such, the ability to innovate and plan ahead enabled them to achieve a first mover’s advantage in a popular section of the automobile industry today.

Heal the world, make it a better place.

I recently came across an article on Kristina Bukharova’s blog regarding Me to We, a social enterprise selling bead work produced by struggling Maasai mothers. As highlighted by Kristina, they help these Maasai mamas earn fair wages, allowing them to support their families. Find out more about them here.

However it does not stop here. Me to We goes the extra mile by encouraging these mamas to take part in financial literacy and leadership training, presenting them with an unprecedented opportunity to acquire new skills and knowledge, and transforming them into leaders who have the ability to positively impact their communities.

What intrigues me about this organization is its commitment towards creating shared value. They do so by improving the livelihood and skills of these Maasai mamas, and reconceiving its product, allowing consumers to take part in this conscious world changing activity one transaction at a time. By infusing the best business practices, products that are highly sustainable and rich in culture, and a world changing spirit, I have faith that these organizations have the capability to transform our world into a better place.

This is how you advertise in the 21st century!

I recently read an article on Nydia Gunawan’s blog about how Ryan Smolkin, the founder of Smoke’s Poutinerie, used social media to market his business. Information and technological integration has had the reputation of high costs and low success rates. But people like Smolkin has proved otherwise by capitalizing the low cost of social media and influence it has on consumers.

In my opinion, by using free and highly accessible social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, Smolkin managed to save advertising costs and achieve something that regular advertisements cannot.

Smolkin took advantage of the fact that both Facebook and Twitter are used by many users daily. By uploading things that would attract his target demographic, mainly news on sports, ideas for new recipes and events taking place in his company, he managed to transform a regular Twitter or Facebook page into a source of daily entertainment that his customers would want to be a part of. Its no wonder that the number of followers on the company’s Facebook page is constantly growing, and customers are now automatically befriending his Facebook page.

Pixar animation studios is setting up its studio in Gastown, Vancouver! After looking at the studio’s configurations, I noticed that Pixar uses various methods to bolster innovation and creativity in all staff. The staff are provided with spacious custom cubicles and are allowed to design them according to their own preferences. In an attempt to bring the rich history of Pixar to its new office in Canada, artifacts such as the Monster Inc. character Mike Wazowski was brought to the Gastown office. This flexibility in working environment, coupled with other unique elements such as the secret bookshelf passageway in the library, allow the designers to temporarily transcend into a world of cartoons and animation where their creativity would flourish.

This mentality of cultivating a company culture that bring out the best in the staff reminds me of Zappos, the online shoe retailer. In class we learnt how companies like Zappos create a happier working environment to spread joy among its staff. This would translate to better service standards for the company. Likewise for Pixar, the firm focuses on cultivating creativity  through its work space configurations, and producing the best animated movies by doing so.

The importance of corporate governance

Repo 105 is an accounting gimmick used by investment bank Lehman Brothers to reduce its net leverage ratio. For these transactions, the bank would temporarily mortgage assets to secure short term financing to pay off its debts. However, such transactions were categorized as “repurchase” instead of “sales”. By doing so, the firm temporarily removed some lower-rated assets from its balance sheets and obtain funds to pay off some debts. This was done near the quarter-end of a financial year to temporarily boost its financial reports, creating a misleading portrayal of the bank’s financial health. When exposed, this incident sparked turmoil in the American banking system.

Watch the video below to better understand Repo 105!

How could such transactions go unnoticed for years? And why were the top executives not held responsible? These transactions were clearly done to deceive investors, who suffered from the swift collapse of the bank. And unlike most of the bank’s employees, whose livelihoods were threatened due to the it’s collapse, the top executives were receiving huge paychecks that guaranteed their financial stability.  This incident highlights the need for diligence in corporate governance, and the importance of financial transparency to enforce a company’s integrity and market stability.

How smart does a firm need to be to win in the smart TV industry?

Toshiba announced that it would channel its resources towards manufacturing large screen ultra-high-definition (UHD) 4k LCD TV as the company predicts a growth in demand. However, how would Toshiba fare if they were to focus on making UHD TVs?

The table below lists the various companies selling UHD TV.

Image taken from: http://www.gadgetreview.com/2013/08/4k-tv-price-comparison.html

According to the table, Toshiba released it’s UHD TV after Samsung and Sony. It would also have a hard time finding an unoccupied position in this product category,as Seiki had already produced smaller size UHD TVs and Sony had likewise released its middle sized 55 and 65 inch UHD TVs prior to Toshiba. This makes it hard for Toshiba to establish itself as a leader in UHD TV industry.

Although the pricing of Toshiba’s 84 inch UHD TV is relatively cheaper, the product remains expensive compared to high-definition TVs. This might prompt price cuts from companies to make UHD TVs more affordable, causing Toshiba to lose its competitive edge. Besides steep prices, a UHD TV wouldn’t be fully utilized as most programs are broadcast in 1080p or 720p displays. Therefore my analysis suggests that Toshiba would not fare well if they were to focus on making UHD TVs.

Mobile payments, here we come!

eBay

Image taken from http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24292894

Braintree was recently acquired by eBay Inc for $800 million in a bid to strengthen PayPal’s presence on mobile devices. Paypal, a subsidiary of eBay, is an online payment platform which facilitates money transfers online.

eBay plans to use Venmo, an application by Braintree which lets customers make payments via mobile deivices, as a platform for expansion into the mobile payments industry. Following the acquisition of Braintree, Venmo will be included in PayPal’s mobile payment capabilities.

For further details on how Venmo works, check out this video below!

I feel that the move to acquire Braintree was a solid one. This allowed eBay to  eliminate a competitor and gain an extra platform for its expansion. Since consumers tend to prioritize the convenience of products and services, smart phone applications would be the ideal market to target. Furthermore, since PayPal is currently one of the dominant online payment platforms, most consumers would be comfortable with its payment systems and be able to adapt to its mobile payment platform with ease. By merging two popular online and mobile payment platforms together, I am confident that eBay’s expansion into the mobile industry would be a huge success.

City Harvest Church Funds Embezzlement

Six leaders of City Harvest Church were being charged for embezzling more than $40 million to fund the music career of Sun Ho, the wife of City Harvest Church’s founder Kong Hee.The church allegedly staged false investments in two companies to cover up the financing of Sun Ho’s music career.

City Harvest Church Trial

Similar cases have occurred in Singapore in the past; when the CEO of the National Kidney Foundation was charged for misusing charitable funds for personal agendas. I personally strongly condemn the act of abusing peoples’ faith in God. In this case, the accused argued that the act of financing Sun Ho’s career was a means to evangelize people. Such statements and testimonies by church leaders not only tarnishes the reputation of Christianity in the eyes of the public, but also cause many churchgoers to lose their faith in the religion. Hence the damage done as a result of this unethical breach of trust far outweighs mere financial embezzlement. I feel that the government should demand greater financial transparency in even religious organizations to prevent such events from reoccurring in the future.
