The health and well being of the class is a primary concern. This is (at times) a challenging class emotionally. We attend to topics on gender, race and sexuality as systems of power, exclusion and violence as manifest in global policies and lived in experiences of war, displacement and settler colonialism. We will work towards creating a learning environment that helps each of us learn with care. Part of this is to incorporate small ceremonies that bring us back in line together during or at the end of class. Another is to incorporate creativity and play, emphasized in your presentations and design of exercises. We will work on building community by attending events together and when the weather allows, to just go outside from time to time.
Some of the topics may unearth difficult memories of the past or present for you. Before you attend, check in with how you are doing and ask yourself if you are ready to engage in these topics at this time. Let me know if you have concerns prior to the class. At some point, you may feel you need extra support. UBC student services can be reached during the day here. For after-hours crisis support, students should contact community resources here. If you need support navigating UBC resources, let me know, I can help you to do so. No questions asked.
Recordings | Due to the sensitive nature of class topics and to protect confidentiality during discussions, there will be no recording of seminars.
