After several months of the worst offshore oil spill incident, a federal report came out and put most of the responsibilities on BP. Other companies and its contractors, like Transocean and Hillibuiton, also shared part of blame for their poor management.
The report said BP and its contractors broke several federal regulations at that time and made a series of decisions which led to a complicated cementing operations, added risksĀ to Transocean. Moreover, because BP is the final decision maker, it should take the ultimate responsibility for the whole process.
BP accepts the report’s conclusion, while other companies involved didn’t respond to the report. BP encouraged the other parties to acknowledge their roles for the incident as soon as possible and work together to reform the offshore drilling safety in the future.
In this case, BP, as an ultimate responsibility taker and the final decision maker, failed to consider the business ethics thoroughly and didn’t ensure the safety and protection of personnel, equipment, natural resources, as well as the environment. In the global operation, companies, especially the big and powerful ones, like BP, should realize and pay more attention to its “global citizens” role, make contributions to ensuring and enhancing the safety.
