This morning I woke up to a text from my dad that had a link to a statement from Mark Parker, the CEO of Nike, had released in regards to Trumps immigration band, the title of the article read, “Breaking: Nike Just Released A Statement and It’s Bad”. The word bad struck me with fear, especially since this would be the first voice of the fashion industry who had chosen to remain silent.
To my relief the article instead was written to show support to all targeted Muslims, and refugees. Parker blatantly stated “this is a policy we DON’T support … We are at our best when we recognize the value of our diverse community.” Parker words ring true for many individuals, myself included. American and non-america citizens have continued to raise their voices loud in disgust with Trumps terrible judgement decision.
Chapter 3 in the textbook focuses on groups and teamwork and how they can be more efficient compared to an individual. The chapter touches on the idea of group diversity which is “the presence of a heterogeneous mix of individuals within a group.” The word diversity holds an optimistic ring to it, since many of us, I myself included, associate diversity as a good thing. I believe that diversity allows individuals to bring differing perspectives which can help a group to come to a more well-rounded decision.
In all honesty I find it devastating that instead of accepting others for their differences Trump instead chooses to shut out other cultures. The real question is why did Trump feel the need to issue the ban in the first place? Was it out of a pursuit for power? Was it because of a fear of change? Or was it in fear of diversity?
