Friday night I was scrolling through Refinery29 looking for the latest and hottest gossip in the fashion world. An article titled “This Is Why #BlackWomenAtWork Has Gone Viral” ended up catching my eye. The article discussed how still in today’s society black women voices are struggling to be heard, especially in the workplace.
I was surprised to see #BlackWomenAtWork in the title of the article. Personally, because I thought society had learned by now that whether or skin is black or white our bones are still the same.
This article reminded me of chapter 3 and how it focuses on values, attitudes, and diversity in the workplace. Diversity in the workplace is known as “the mix of people in organizations in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, age, and demographic characteristics such as education and socio-economic status” (Orgnizational Behavior Concepts, Controversies, Applications).
I personally believe that diversity in the workplace is very important. By combining individuals who think differently and are expereinced in a variety of areas helps to create a more well-rounded organization. Similar to the idea of combining individuals from all different races and ethnicities it helps to widen the organizations perspctive from a cultural standing point.
I hope that come the time I graudate the there will no longer be a need for #BlackWomenAtWork. That there will come a day when all of society realizes that an individuals personality and work ethic is more important than the color of their skin.
