Astilbe x arendsii
florist’s spirea
Saxifragaceae
Characteristics: Soft, pink, feathery, fairy-like inflorescences. Ferny leaves, triternately compound, nice foliage. Clumps and spreads well. Was often used as a cut flower.
Growing conditions: Beautiful en masse. They do well in Vancouver and don’t need irrigation in woodland habitat, but flowers will last longer with some irrigation.
Limitations: Short bloom – only 3-4 weeks. Considered “old-fashioned.” Not as much bang for your buck.
