Marketing Assignment Reflection

Overall, I am very happy with my group. We all work well together and come up with pretty interesting ideas. We all manage to meet up quite frequently as well. I am also very satisfied with our video project. We all spent a significant number of hours on the video and i think we thought of some really good ideas. With the other marketing assignments, i feel that it prepared us well for the final video assignment. Without the frequent homework assignments, then we would probably have a harder time when creating and filming the group video.

Response: If You Cant Afford it Apple Doesn’t Want You

In this article, “If you can’t afford it apple doesn’t want you” by Jay Baer, it says that apple only wants a certain type of customer. They have kept their price tags well above their competitors, yet they still maintain popular and successful. That is the reason why they do not develop much products in a lower price level. The new iPhone 5c is said to be “conceived based on investor pressure to tap the Chinese market, among others” and is also said to be “so half-assed.” I do agree that apple doesn’t need to target more frugal customers, since their exclusivity is what makes them so desirable.

For the Last paragraph of the article, I also completely agree. They are definitely slow on innovation these few years. The changes have only been minor and not a lot of new innovated changes. I do wish that they would change that and be like before, when they could with provide mind blowing innovations.

Response to “Who is the Nintendo 2DS for?”

In response to Patricia Poon’s blog post regarding the consumer demographic of the Nintendo 2Ds, I completely agree. Even for myself, I was severely tempted to buy the new Pokemon games but I do not own a Nintendo 3DS and do not wish to purchase one. But given that this 2DS is significantly cheaper than the 3DS and still does the job, I would seriously consider buying one if my desire to play the new Pokemon games were extreme enough. The fact that they released the 2DS on the same day as the new Pokemon games, I would also agree that it is a smart move. A lot of people probably wouldn’t have bought the new Nintendo hand held device if there wasn’t the incentive of the new Pokemon game, and the other way around too.

Product Presentation

As a consumer, product presentation is very important to me. No matter how good the product is claimed to be, if the presentation is horrible then I would have a bad experience when using the product. For example, whenever I go window shopping, the bright displays and the visually inviting design of the shops of luxury brands always tempts me to go inside and look around, no matter if I actually need or want any of the products. Not only should the stores be aesthetically pleasing but the packaging and the actual design of the products should be too. Consumers in this generation buy a lot of items according to how the product is designed and packaged. Since most products are homogenous, the only distinction is the way it is designed. Therefore making packaging and design of the product essential for it to be a successful product. An example of this is contacts. While all contacts serve the same purpose and is internally all the same, the way its packaged is different and they are even designed in different colours. By providing aesthetic differentiation, these products would stand out to consumers and encourage demand.

Coca-Cola’s New Corporate Website Aims to Refresh the World through Storytelling.

In this blog post on the marketing blog “Convince & Convert”by Jessica Gioglio, she talked about Coca-Cola’s new major project which is a complete revamp of their website. Now they follow a more storyboard and visually stimulating layout, “featuring content themed around pop culture, social media, brand history, marketing campaigns, recipes, career advice, and more the website is a far cry from the traditional corporate website – in a good way.” I agree that this is the type of marketing direction companies in this generation should gear towards. The website also incorporates sharing abilities with different social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Etc. This allows the viewers to easily share whatever they found interesting with their fellow peers. I feel like other companies should follow in Coca-Cola’s footsteps. If not, then they wont be able to capture the interests of the Generation Ys and Zs. Like Jessia Gioglio wrote, “This type of experience showcases the potential companies have to redefine their corporate website into a curated visual, shareable experience.”

Coca-Cola’s New Corporate Website Aims to Refresh the World Through Storytelling

In modern society, advertisements, such as commercials and posters, have a great influence on our culture. We tend to agree with whatever the advertisements say is the “best item on the market”.  For example, Apple comes out with a new iPhone every year, and every year they call it “the next best thing”. This makes us believe that our existing iPhone is now inadequate and therefore we upgrade to the new one. Therefore advertisements have a great influence on what we do.

The poster above is from Reebok, the athletic wear company. It is encouraging men to cheat on their girlfriends. While most people might not take it to heart and actually do what the poster says, it is very unethical that they would promote their product that way. They are saying that cheating on girlfriends is okay and that people should do it. Also, the poster is demeaning to women by comparing girlfriends to workouts. Clearly, they are not the same thing.

In the advertisement above, Dolce & Gabbana are advocating for male power over females, like the Reebok poster. Like before, the general public probably won’t actually follow along with the actions in the posters, but what we are getting from these companies is that this kind of behaviour is okay and acceptable.

Nevertheless, I do agree that these types of advertisements get the most attention and succeed in what they are meant to do. However, this proves how society hasn’t changed from the historical period when women weren’t able to vote. We are still being undermined and portrayed as inferior in these advertisements.

So the next time we look at a poster and laugh at how its funny, we should think about what the poster is really saying.
