In this day, increasing numbers of businesses pay more attention on interacting with consumers via technologies and the Internet in search of accessing more clients and building up better customers’ loyalty. In David Li’s blog post, he talks about the ethical issues raised as a result of collecting personal information and he believes those company, more or less, invades the personal privacy of their costumers. From where I stand, I think it does no harm to share some of our personal data to those businesses in order to obtain better services while the firms should have a “baseline” on using people’s private information.

There have been criticized for the collection of personal data without user consent. Some famous company like Facebook and Google are also revealed that they are collecting users’ personal information without tell them the fact that they are doing so. Clearly, their behaviors do not follow the business ethics. However, if we change the perspective viewing the virtual world and judge it as a real society, every user is the same as each citizen in the real world. Our name, address, personality and preference has to be shared to every one else in order to involve into this “community”. As for return, we are able to receive services that fit our preference. However, not all personal data should be spread out and this hands the work to those company collecting data from those users. They are responsible for putting the information into good use and keeping it safe. Therefore, government should get involve as an “over looker” to make sure company are using people’s private information to do the right things.
